The library pavilion was quiet—too quiet. Wei WuXian grinned as he dragged Lan WangJi behind a tall shelf, hidden from view. “Lan Zhan, are you sure no one’s going to come in here?”
Lan WangJi gave him a calm look, though his ears were tinged pink. “This is a restricted area. No one should enter.”
“Should,” Wei WuXian repeated, his grin widening. “But if someone does…”
“They will not,” Lan WangJi said firmly.
“Alright then,” Wei WuXian whispered, his tone teasing as he leaned in closer. “Let’s see just how quiet you can be, Hanguang-Jun.”
Lan WangJi’s composure faltered ever so slightly as Wei WuXian tugged him by the front of his robes, their lips meeting in a heated kiss. Lan WangJi’s hands settled on Wei WuXian’s waist, pulling him closer.
Wei WuXian, ever the mischievous one, deepened the kiss, pressing Lan WangJi against the shelf. “Lan Zhan,” he murmured against his lips, “you’re really good at this, you know?”
“Mn,” Lan WangJi replied, but before he could say anything else, the sound of footsteps echoed through the library.
“Lan Zhan,” Wei WuXian whispered, barely holding back a laugh, “someone’s coming!”
Lan WangJi’s grip on Wei WuXian tightened, as if debating whether to let go. Before they could move, the footsteps stopped right on the other side of the shelf.
“Lan WangJi? Wei WuXian?” a familiar voice called out.
Wei WuXian froze. “Oh no,” he mouthed, his eyes wide.
The voice called out again, sharper this time. “Wei WuXian, if you’re hiding here to avoid trouble, I swear—”
The shelf creaked ominously, and then, in a spectacularly unfortunate moment, Wei WuXian leaned too far back, sending an entire row of books tumbling to the ground.
“Wei Ying,” Lan WangJi said, his tone a mix of exasperation and fondness.
Jiang Cheng appeared around the corner, his arms crossed and his expression thunderous. “I knew it! What the hell are you two doing in here?”
Wei WuXian straightened up, brushing imaginary dust off his robes as if nothing had happened. “Ah, Jiang Cheng! Fancy seeing you here! We were, uh, just…studying.”
“Studying?” Jiang Cheng repeated, his gaze shifting between Wei WuXian’s flushed face and Lan WangJi, who was somehow managing to look composed despite the situation.
“Yes, studying!” Wei WuXian said, his voice a little too cheerful. “Lan Zhan was teaching me the proper way to, um, stack books!”
Jiang Cheng’s eyes narrowed. “You were stacking books. Against the shelf. With your faces pressed together?”
Wei WuXian opened his mouth to respond, but Jiang Cheng held up a hand. “Nope. I don’t want to hear it. Whatever this is, take it somewhere else.”
“Somewhere else?” Wei WuXian asked, grinning. “So you’re not saying we can’t do it, just not here?”
Jiang Cheng’s expression darkened. “Get out!”
Wei WuXian grabbed Lan WangJi’s hand, pulling him toward the exit. “Come on, Lan Zhan. Let’s leave before Jiang Cheng decides to give us a lecture.”
As they disappeared through the door, Jiang Cheng muttered under his breath, “Why do I even bother?”
Outside, Wei WuXian was laughing so hard he had to lean against Lan WangJi for support. “Did you see his face, Lan Zhan? Priceless!”
Lan WangJi sighed softly, but the corner of his mouth twitched upward. “Wei Ying, you are impossible.”
“And yet, you love me,” Wei WuXian teased, planting a quick kiss on Lan WangJi’s cheek before they walked off, hand in hand, leaving chaos—and a very annoyed Jiang Cheng—behind.
