Summary: Trapped in the cave, Jungkook and Taehyung work together to escape. The darkness and danger force them into a moment of raw honesty as they share secrets and vulnerabilities by the dim light of a makeshift fire.

The oppressive darkness of the cave was absolute. Without light, the air felt heavier, pressing in on Jungkook and Taehyung as they stood in silence.
Jungkook reached for his belt, pulling out a small flint and steel. He struck it a few times until a faint spark caught on the dry cloth he carried. The flame grew steadily, illuminating the space with a flickering, golden glow.
In the light, Taehyung’s face was drawn, his features etched with anger and disbelief. He sat on the cold stone floor, his back against the rough wall of the cave.
“You were right,” Taehyung muttered, his voice bitter. “I was an idiot to trust him.”
Jungkook crouched by the fire, feeding it bits of dry moss and kindling he had gathered from the forest. His expression was calm but distant. “You’re not an idiot. You just wanted to believe he was still the person you remembered.”
Taehyung scoffed. “And that makes me what? Naive? Blind?”
Jungkook’s dark eyes met his. “It makes you human.”
The words caught Taehyung off guard. For a moment, he didn’t know how to respond.
Jungkook stood, his gaze shifting to the cave walls. The space was narrow but tall, the ceiling disappearing into the shadows above. Faint echoes of dripping water punctuated the silence.
“We need to find another way out,” Jungkook said, his tone practical. “Caves like this usually have more than one exit. If we’re lucky, we can find a tunnel that leads back to the surface.”
Taehyung didn’t move. He stared at the flames, his mind replaying Minhyun’s betrayal over and over.
“Why do people always betray me?” he said quietly, more to himself than to Jungkook.
Jungkook paused, glancing back at him. “Because they’re afraid,” he said simply. “And fear makes people desperate.”
Taehyung looked up, his eyes narrowing. “You say that like you know it personally.”
Jungkook hesitated, his jaw tightening. Then he sat down across from Taehyung, his movements deliberate.
“I’ve seen fear drive people to do terrible things,” Jungkook said, his voice low. “Things they swore they’d never do. Sometimes it’s a betrayal. Sometimes it’s worse.”
Taehyung studied him, the flickering firelight casting shadows across Jungkook’s sharp features. “And you? What did fear make you do?”
Jungkook’s gaze flicked to the fire, his expression unreadable. “I killed someone once,” he said quietly.
The admission hung in the air like a heavy weight.
Taehyung leaned forward, his brow furrowing. “Who?”
“A traitor to my family,” Jungkook said, his tone devoid of emotion. “Or at least, that’s what I was told. I didn’t question it. I just… did what I was ordered to do.”
Taehyung’s throat tightened. He didn’t know what he had expected Jungkook to say, but the cold, matter-of-fact way he spoke about it sent a chill through him.
“Do you regret it?” Taehyung asked softly.
Jungkook’s jaw clenched. “Every day.”
The rawness in his voice surprised Taehyung. For the first time, he saw a crack in Jungkook’s stoic façade—a glimpse of the pain he carried but never spoke of.
“I never asked for this life,” Jungkook continued, his gaze distant. “I was raised to obey, to fight, to kill if necessary. But no one tells you what comes after. The guilt. The nightmares. The questions you can’t answer.”
Taehyung’s chest ached as he listened. He had always seen Jungkook as unshakable, a force of nature that nothing could break. But now, in the dim light of the fire, he saw the man beneath the armor.
“You’re not that person anymore,” Taehyung said quietly. “You don’t have to be.”
Jungkook’s eyes flicked to him, something vulnerable and uncertain lurking beneath their dark surface.
“And you?” Jungkook asked, his voice soft. “What are you running from, Taehyung?”
Taehyung hesitated. He had spent so long burying his pain, building walls to protect himself from the world. But now, faced with Jungkook’s honesty, those walls felt fragile.
“I’m running from my brother,” Taehyung said finally. “From what he did to me. From what he made me.”
Jungkook’s brow furrowed. “Made you?”
Taehyung let out a bitter laugh. “An exile. A traitor. A failure.” He looked away, his fingers curling into fists. “He was always jealous, always waiting for the moment he could turn the court against me. And I let him. I was too blind to see what he was doing until it was too late.”
Jungkook watched him, his expression unreadable. “It wasn’t your fault.”
“Wasn’t it?” Taehyung said, his voice rising. “I trusted him. I believed he’d always have my back. But I was wrong. And now…” He trailed off, shaking his head. “Now I don’t even know who I am anymore.”
The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the crackling of the fire.
Jungkook leaned forward, his voice low but firm. “You’re not a failure, Taehyung. You’ve survived things most people wouldn’t. You’re still here. That means something.”
Taehyung’s gaze snapped to him, his heart clenching at the intensity in Jungkook’s words.
“And if your brother took everything from you,” Jungkook continued, his voice softening, “then you fight to take it back. Piece by piece, if you have to. You don’t stop. You don’t give up.”
The determination in Jungkook’s voice lit a spark in Taehyung’s chest, one he hadn’t felt in a long time.
For a moment, they sat in silence, the weight of their shared confessions hanging in the air.
Then Taehyung spoke, his voice barely above a whisper. “Thank you.”
Jungkook didn’t respond immediately, but the faintest hint of a smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
“Get some rest,” Jungkook said, leaning back against the wall. “We’ll figure out a way out of here in the morning.”
Taehyung nodded, his heart still heavy but a little lighter than before.
As the fire burned low, the two men sat together in the darkness, the fragile beginnings of trust forming between them.
