Summary: After narrowly escaping Ryujin and her team, Jungkook and Taehyung find shelter in a hidden grove. Exhausted and injured, they share a rare moment of honesty, peeling back the layers of distrust and revealing glimpses of their true selves.

The grove was a small oasis hidden deep within the Forbidden Forest, surrounded by dense thickets and shaded by ancient willows. A trickling stream wound its way through the clearing, its gentle sound breaking the heavy silence that had followed their escape.
Jungkook knelt by the water’s edge, rinsing his blade and splashing cool water onto his face. His sharp features were illuminated by the faint moonlight filtering through the trees, but his posture was tense, his movements precise and controlled.
Taehyung sat a few feet away, slumped against a moss-covered rock. His breathing was still uneven, his limbs aching from the frantic chase. He rubbed his temples, frustration evident in every line of his body.
“We can’t keep this up,” Taehyung muttered, breaking the quiet. “They’ll find us again. They always do.”
Jungkook didn’t respond immediately. He finished cleaning his sword, then rose to his feet and turned to face Taehyung.
“Do you want to stop?” Jungkook asked, his tone neutral. “Because stopping means dying.”
Taehyung glared at him. “I don’t need you to remind me of that.”
“Then stop complaining,” Jungkook said sharply, sliding his sword back into its sheath.
Taehyung’s eyes narrowed, his temper flaring. “You don’t get to act like you’re above this. You’re running just like I am. So tell me, oh mighty shadow warrior, what’s your grand plan? Because I don’t see one.”
Jungkook’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t rise to the bait. Instead, he sat down across from Taehyung, his dark eyes boring into him.
“My plan,” Jungkook said quietly, “is to keep you alive. Whether you like it or not.”
The words hung in the air, heavy with meaning.
Taehyung opened his mouth to retort but faltered. There was something in Jungkook’s tone—something unspoken yet undeniable—that made him pause.
“You act like this is all for my sake,” Taehyung said, his voice softer now. “But I don’t think it is. You’re running from something too, aren’t you?”
Jungkook’s gaze flicked away, the faintest crack in his stoic demeanor.
Taehyung pressed on, his curiosity outweighing his caution. “You talk about survival like it’s all you know. But no one fights this hard unless they’re trying to protect something.”
Jungkook didn’t answer right away. Instead, he leaned back against a tree, his expression unreadable.
“You think you’ve got me figured out?” Jungkook asked finally, his voice low.
Taehyung shrugged. “I think there’s more to you than the cold, brooding act you put on.”
For a moment, Jungkook looked as though he might brush off the comment with one of his usual barbed retorts. But then he sighed, his shoulders sagging slightly.
“There’s always more,” Jungkook said quietly. “But that doesn’t mean it matters.”
“It matters to me,” Taehyung said before he could stop himself.
The words surprised them both.
Jungkook’s eyes met Taehyung’s, and for the first time, the walls between them seemed to waver. The tension in Jungkook’s posture softened, and he exhaled slowly, as if releasing a burden he’d been carrying for too long.
“I was raised to fight,” Jungkook said, his voice distant. “To protect, to kill if I had to. That’s what my father wanted—a weapon he could control.” He paused, his jaw tightening. “But even weapons can break.”
Taehyung stared at him, his earlier anger replaced by something quieter, more fragile. “And now?”
Jungkook hesitated. “Now… I don’t know. I’m still trying to figure that out.”
The vulnerability in his voice caught Taehyung off guard. He had seen Jungkook as many things—aloof, infuriating, impossibly strong—but never as someone uncertain, someone struggling to find his place.
Taehyung shifted, leaning forward slightly. “You’re not just a weapon,” he said, his tone earnest. “You’re more than that. Whether you believe it or not.”
Jungkook’s gaze flicked to him, a flicker of something unreadable passing across his face.
“And what about you?” Jungkook asked, his voice soft but probing. “The exiled prince who’s too stubborn to give up. What are you fighting for?”
Taehyung’s throat tightened. He hadn’t expected the question, and for a moment, he didn’t know how to answer.
“I’m fighting for my name,” Taehyung said finally, his voice tinged with bitterness. “For the life I lost because of my brother’s lies.” He looked away, his fingers digging into the moss beneath him. “I don’t even know if it’s worth it anymore. But I can’t stop. Not until I’ve made things right.”
The rawness in his words struck a chord in Jungkook.
“You’ll get there,” Jungkook said quietly.
Taehyung let out a bitter laugh. “You sound awfully confident for someone who barely knows me.”
“I know enough,” Jungkook said simply.
Their gazes met again, the space between them charged with an unspoken understanding. For the first time, the barriers they’d both carefully built seemed to crack, allowing a glimpse of the people beneath.
Taehyung broke the moment first, glancing toward the stream. “We should rest while we can. Who knows how long we’ll have before Ryujin comes back with more reinforcements.”
Jungkook nodded. “You take the first watch. I’ll wake you in a few hours.”
Taehyung raised a brow. “You trust me to keep watch?”
“Not entirely,” Jungkook admitted, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. “But I trust you want to stay alive as much as I do.”
Taehyung snorted, but he couldn’t help the small smile that formed on his lips. “Fair enough.”
As Jungkook settled against the tree, his eyes drifting shut, Taehyung turned his attention to the forest beyond the grove. The shadows were still, but his thoughts were anything but.
Maybe, Taehyung thought, we’re not so different after all.
