Summary: Jungkook continues to follow Taehyung through the outskirts of Gwahon. When Taehyung senses he is being shadowed, a tense confrontation ensues, sparking curiosity and suspicion between the two.
The edge of the town was quieter, the bustling market square replaced by winding paths lined with humble cottages and scattered livestock. The scent of smoke from cooking fires lingered in the air, mingling with the faint aroma of damp earth.
Taehyung walked briskly, his hood pulled up once more, obscuring his features. Despite his seemingly relaxed demeanor, every muscle in his body was taut with awareness. He had felt the stranger's gaze long before he left the market, a weight pressing against the back of his neck.
He resisted the urge to look over his shoulder. Showing unease would only encourage whoever was tailing him. Instead, he quickened his pace, his mind racing with possibilities. Was it a bounty hunter? A spy sent by his brother? Or merely a thief hoping for an easy mark?
Taehyung turned down a narrow alley, the cobblestones uneven beneath his boots. He ducked into the shadows of an overhanging roof and waited, his breath shallow as he strained to hear any sign of pursuit.
Sure enough, the faint scuff of boots on stone reached his ears.
His pursuer was careful, skilled even, but Taehyung had spent years honing his instincts. He pressed himself against the wall, his hand slipping to the dagger concealed beneath his cloak.
The sound grew louder, closer.
When the figure emerged from the shadows, Taehyung moved.
In a flash, he spun out from his hiding place, his dagger glinting in the dim light as he pressed it against the stranger's throat.
"Who are you, and why are you following me?" Taehyung demanded, his voice low and sharp. His honey-colored eyes bore into the man before him, fierce and unyielding.
Jungkook didn't flinch. His hands remained at his sides, his expression calm despite the blade resting against his skin.
"Quick reflexes," Jungkook remarked, his voice smooth and measured. "But unnecessary.
Taehyung's brow furrowed. "Unnecessary? You've been shadowing me since the market. That's hardly an accident."
Jungkook allowed a faint smirk to tug at the corner of his lips. "Perhaps I was curious."
"Curious?" Taehyung's grip on the dagger tightened. "You don't look like someone who wanders aimlessly."
"And you don't look like someone who belongs here," Jungkook countered, his gaze steady. "A prince, perhaps? Or a noble in disguise?"
The words struck like a blow, though Taehyung's face betrayed nothing. He masked his surprise with a sharp laugh. "You must have me confused with someone else. I'm no one."
"No one," Jungkook repeated, his tone skeptical. His dark eyes flicked over Taehyung's cloak, his boots, the faint embroidery at the hem of his tunic. "Strange, then, that 'no one' carries themselves like royalty."
Taehyung scowled, but he didn't lower the dagger. "And who are you to make such observations?"
Jungkook tilted his head slightly, his smirk fading into something more serious. "Someone who knows how to recognize a threat."
Their eyes locked, the silence between them heavy with tension.
Taehyung's heartbeat thundered in his ears, but he refused to waver.
There was something unnerving about this man-not just his composure but the quiet intensity in his gaze, as though he were studying Taehyung's every move, every breath.
Finally, Jungkook spoke again, his voice soft yet commanding. "If I wanted to harm you, I wouldn't have followed you. I would have struck already."
The logic stung, though Taehyung didn't dare admit it. With a reluctant sigh, he lowered the dagger, stepping back to create a sliver of space between them.
"Then what do you want?" he asked, his tone still wary.
Jungkook adjusted his cloak, the fabric shifting to reveal the hilt of a sword at his side. "Answers."
"To what?"
"To who you are and why you're here," Jungkook replied bluntly. "A man like you doesn't wander into a place like Gwahon without reason."
Taehyung's lips pressed into a thin line. He had no intention of revealing his true identity to a stranger, no matter how perceptive -or disarmingly handsome-he might be.
"That's none of your concern," Taehyung said at last, his voice firm.
Jungkook regarded him for a moment, then nodded as though accepting the answer. "Fair enough. But consider this a warning: If you're hiding something, others will notice. And not everyone in this town is as patient as I am."
Taehyung bristled at the veiled threat, but before he could respond, Jungkook stepped back, his movements slow and deliberate.
"Take care, stranger," Jungkook said, his tone oddly formal. Then, without another word, he disappeared into the shadows, leaving Taehyung alone once more.
Taehyung stared after him, his mind a whirlwind of confusion and irritation. Whoever that man was, he wasn't ordinary. His calm demeanor, his piercing gaze-it all felt calculated, as though he'd been testing Taehyung in some way.
Shaking his head, Taehyung sheathed his dagger and resumed his journey, though his thoughts remained tangled.
"Curiosity can be dangerous," he muttered to himself, his voice low. "For both of us."
