The days following the meeting felt like a blur to Lena. Every time she passed Jason’s office, she couldn’t help but glance at the door, as though expecting him to suddenly appear. Her thoughts were scattered, her mind preoccupied with his words, “I’ll be watching you.” She knew he was a man of few words, a person whose approval was earned through results, not small talk. “Come in, Lena,” Jason said, his voice deep and smooth, carrying an authority that made her pulse quicken. Instead, it was almost as if he were sizing her up, testing the waters of her capabilities.

Lena stepped inside, her nerves intensifying. “You needed to see me, Mr. Blackwell?” she asked, doing her best to sound confident.

Jason raised an eyebrow. “Don’t be so formal. You’ve been with the company long enough to drop the 'Mr.'”

The casual tone was disarming, and for a moment, Lena forgot she was standing in the office of one of the most powerful men in the industry. She cleared her throat and nodded. “Of course, Jason.”

He nodded toward the chair across from his desk, gesturing for her to sit. “I’ve been reviewing your work. You’ve been impressive, Lena. Your strategy for the campaign is solid. But I think it could use a bit more—creativity. Something unexpected.”

Lena’s heart leapt at the praise, but then her mind began working quickly. “What kind of adjustments are you thinking?” she asked, eager to prove herself.

Jason leaned back in his chair, his fingers steepled as he stared at her with an intensity that made Lena’s breath hitch. “I want to push boundaries. Think outside the box. We’re not just selling a product; we’re selling an experience. Can you handle that?”

Lena’s pulse raced, but she forced herself to remain calm. “I can definitely handle that. I’ll get started right away.”

Jason gave a nod of approval. “Good. I’ll be expecting a proposal by the end of the week. Don’t disappoint me.”

Lena couldn’t help but feel a surge of determination. She was ready for this challenge, ready to prove herself in ways she hadn’t even imagined. But as she turned to leave, something else lingered between them—an unspoken connection, an energy that hadn’t been there before.

Jason’s gaze followed her as she walked to the door, and for the briefest moment, their eyes locked. Lena’s heart fluttered, but she quickly shook the feeling off. This was business. Nothing more.

“Lena,” Jason’s voice interrupted her thoughts.

She turned back, trying to maintain composure. “Yes?”

“Don’t overthink this. Just focus on the work. We’ll see where it leads.”

It was the closest thing to an invitation she could interpret. A flicker of hope ignited in her chest, but she tamped it down immediately.
