The desperate search

The Desperate Search

Alex stumbled through the darkness, his heart racing with fear. "Maggie!" he shouted, but there was no response.

He fumbled in his pocket for a match, striking it against the wall to cast flickering shadows around the room. The windmill's interior was deserted, the only sound the creaking of the old wooden beams.

Alex's eyes scanned the room frantically, but there was no sign of Maggie. He rushed to the door, flinging it open to reveal a dark and deserted landscape.

The moon was hidden behind thick clouds, casting the world in an inky blackness. Alex strained his eyes, peering into the darkness for any sign of Maggie.

And then, he saw it. A faint light in the distance, flickering like a candle flame. Alex's heart leapt with hope as he set off towards the light, his feet pounding against the dusty earth.

As he drew closer, he saw that the light was coming from an old, abandoned cottage. The door was hanging off its hinges, and the windows were shattered, but the light was coming from inside.

Alex rushed towards the cottage, his heart racing with fear. "Maggie!" he shouted, bursting through the doorway.

But what he saw inside made his blood run cold...

Alex's eyes adjusted slowly to the dim light inside the cottage. He saw that the room was small and cluttered, the walls lined with old, dusty shelves. But it was what lay on the table in the center of the room that made his heart skip a beat.

Maggie was sitting in a chair, her eyes closed, her face pale. The candle flame cast eerie shadows on her face, making her look like a ghost.

Alex rushed to her side, shaking her gently. "Maggie, wake up!" he whispered urgently.

Maggie's eyes flickered open, and she looked up at Alex with a confused expression. "Alex?" she whispered. "What...what happened?"

Alex helped Maggie to her feet, and she leaned against him, her body shaking. "I don't know," Alex said. "I found you here. What do you remember?"

Maggie's eyes clouded over, and she looked around the room as if seeing it for the first time. "I remember...I remember being in the windmill," she said slowly. "And then...and then I was here."

Alex's eyes scanned the room, searching for any clues. That was when he saw it - a small, leather-bound book lying open on a nearby shelf. The pages were yellowed and cracked, and the text was written in a language Alex couldn't understand.

But one phrase caught his eye - a phrase that was written in English, in bold, red letters: "They will come for you."

Alex felt a chill run down his spine as he read the ominous message. Who was behind this sinister warning? And what did they want from Maggie and him?

Maggie's eyes were fixed on the book, her face pale. "What does it mean?" she whispered.

Alex shook his head. "I don't know, but I think we should get out of here. Now."

As they turned to leave, Alex noticed something else strange. The cottage door was no longer hanging off its hinges. It was closed, and a large, old-fashioned key was lodged in the keyhole.

Alex's heart sank. They were trapped.

Suddenly, the candle flame on the table flickered and died, plunging the cottage into darkness. Alex heard Maggie's frightened gasp, and he quickly pulled out his phone to use as a flashlight.

The beam of light illuminated the small room, revealing a figure standing in the corner. Tall, imposing, and shrouded in shadows.

"Who are you?" Alex demanded, trying to keep his voice steady.

The figure didn't respond. Instead, it began to move closer, its presence seeming to fill the room.
