Chapter 19: Rebirth

He arrived in Chronos HQ, but it wasn’t the HQ he knew. The lights were dim, and the walls hummed with the low thrum of an active rift engine. Elliot’s boots echoed in the hallway.

He passed by familiar faces—agents frozen in time—like statues. They hovered mid-step, locked in suspended animation. His breath fogged the air.

This is it, he thought. The beginning of everything.

He found the control room, his eyes locking onto the figure at the center. His future self—the Collector—stood over a console, hands flying across glowing keys. The faint glow of the Paradox Engine pulsed in the background.

“You’re too late,” the Collector said, his back still turned. “I’ve already calculated every version of this encounter.”

Elliot didn’t speak. He watched himself—older, colder, and more methodical. His future self wasn’t afraid. He wasn’t even angry.

“I win,” the Collector said, finally turning to face him. “This is the only version of the timeline where we both survive. You’ll understand one day.”

“You’re right,” Elliot said softly. He raised his stabilizer, pointing it directly at the Collector’s chest.

“Don't do this,” the Collector said, his smile finally gone. “You’ll become me.”

“No,” Elliot replied. “I’ll become better.”

He activated the stabilizer. Time cracked.

The Collector's body flickered with static, his eyes wild with disbelief. For the first time, Elliot saw it—fear.

“You can't—”

“I can,” Elliot said, his voice like iron. “Because I’m not a thread anymore.”

With a pulse of energy, the Collector shattered into a thousand points of light, his echoes dissolving into fragments of timelines that no longer had a home.
