Mahir leaned against the balcony railing, gazing at the stars scattered across the night sky. The city lights below glimmered, but his mind was elsewhere—caught in the past. It had been five years since he had seen Bela. Five years since she walked away from their love, leaving behind nothing but unanswered questions and a hollow ache in his heart.
He still remembered her laughter, the way her eyes sparkled when she spoke about her dreams. But those dreams never included him—or so he thought.
That night, as he scrolled through his messages, a familiar name popped up on his screen. Bela. His heart skipped a beat. He hesitated before opening it.
“Hi, Mahir. I know it’s been years, but can we meet? There’s something I need to tell you. Please come to Park Lane Café tomorrow at 5 PM.”
He read the message twice, his emotions swinging between anger and curiosity. Why now? Why after all these years?
The next evening, Mahir arrived at the café, his heart racing. Bela was already there, sitting by the window, nervously fidgeting with her bracelet. She looked up when he entered, her eyes meeting his. For a moment, it felt like no time had passed.
“Mahir,” she said softly as he sat across from her.
“Bela,” he replied, his voice steadier than he felt. “Why did you call me? What’s this about?”
She took a deep breath, her hands trembling slightly. “I’ve thought about this moment for years, rehearsed what I’d say, but now that you’re here, I—” She paused, struggling to find the words.
Mahir’s jaw tightened. “Five years, Bela. You left without an explanation. Do you have any idea what that did to me?”
“I know,” she said, her voice breaking. “And I’m sorry. I was a coward, Mahir. I thought walking away was the right thing to do.”
“Why?” he demanded. “What could possibly make you think that?”
“I was scared,” she admitted, tears pooling in her eyes. “I was falling too hard, too fast. And I didn’t think I deserved you. I thought I’d only hold you back, that you’d be better off without me.”
Mahir stared at her, his anger softening as her words sank in. “You didn’t even give me a choice, Bela. You made the decision for both of us.”
“I know,” she said, wiping her tears. “And I’ve regretted it every single day. But I’m here now, Mahir, because I can’t keep running. I still love you. I never stopped.”
His heart thudded in his chest. The words he had longed to hear for years were finally spoken, but the pain of her absence still lingered.
“Do you have any idea how much I wanted to hear that back then?” he asked, his voice thick with emotion. “How much I wanted you to fight for us?”
She reached across the table, her hand resting on his. “I’m fighting now, Mahir. I know I can’t change the past, but I want a future—with you. If you’ll have me.”
For a moment, silence hung between them. Then Mahir sighed, his expression softening. “You broke me, Bela. But even after everything, I never stopped loving you either. How could I?”
Her lips quivered, and a tear slipped down her cheek. “Does that mean you’ll give us another chance?”
Mahir smiled, a hint of the boyish grin she used to adore. “It means I never stopped hoping you’d come back.”
Relief washed over her face, and she let out a shaky laugh. “I missed you so much, Mahir.”
“I missed you too,” he said, squeezing her hand. “But no more running, Bela. This time, we’re in this together.”
As they sat there, hands intertwined, the past melted away, leaving only the promise of a new beginning. They had found their way back to each other, proving that sometimes, love just needs a little time—and a lot of courage—to find its way home.
