A Summer of Letters

Avni hadn’t expected it. She hadn’t even known what to expect when she returned to her childhood home for the summer. After years in the city, work had taken its toll, and a month in the familiar comfort of her parents’ house seemed like the perfect escape. What she hadn’t anticipated was finding Neil again—the boy she once adored and never truly forgot.

Neil was the kind of person you didn’t just meet and forget. He was kind, thoughtful, and made the world feel lighter. They had spent one perfect summer together during high school, sharing lazy afternoons, inside jokes, and dreams of the future. But life had pulled them in separate directions, and by the end of that summer, they had parted ways, promising to keep in touch. But that had never happened.

Nearly a decade later, she bumped into him at the local bookstore. Neil still had the same easy smile and the warmth that made her feel at home. Their reunion was like stepping back in time, but Avni couldn’t shake the feeling that something had been left unsaid.

It wasn’t until the next day that she found out about the letters.

She was at a café with a friend when she spotted Neil sitting at a corner table, surrounded by books. As she walked toward him, she noticed a small, worn notebook open in front of him. Neil looked up and smiled.

“Avni, it’s so good to see you,” he said, standing up to greet her. “How’ve you been?”

“I’ve been good, Neil,” she replied, still a little surprised to see him. “And you?”

“I’ve been… well, busy. But life’s been kind.” He motioned to the notebook. “Do you remember those letters we used to write to each other?”

Avni froze for a moment. Letters. The summer they spent together had been filled with long, handwritten letters. They had promised to keep in touch, write about everything, and never let go of the bond they shared. But when the days turned into weeks and then months, those letters never came. It felt like a chapter that had ended too soon.

Neil continued, not noticing her shock. “I kept all of them. I’ve written to you every summer since we last saw each other. But you never replied.”

Avni’s heart raced. She had no idea. “I… I didn’t know, Neil. I didn’t know you still—” She stopped, unsure of what to say.

Neil smiled gently. “I didn’t mind. I knew you were busy. I just wanted to write. I think I needed to.”

Avni felt a lump form in her throat. For all the years that had passed, Neil had never stopped thinking about her. The summer of their youth, which had seemed so fleeting at the time, had been etched in both their hearts.

“Do you want to see them?” he asked softly.

Avni nodded, her curiosity piqued. He handed her the notebook, and she opened it carefully. Inside were pages and pages of letters, each one more heartfelt than the last. Neil had written about his life, dreams, struggles—and, most of all, how he missed her. Each letter was a thread of connection between them that never truly disappeared.

She read through the letters, the familiar handwriting stirring memories she had long buried. Finally, she found a letter written just a month ago. It was raw, vulnerable, and honest.

"Avni," it began, "I’ve been waiting for you to come back. I know it’s been years, and we’ve both changed, but some things never leave you. I can’t help but think about that summer. Maybe I’m foolish to hold on to something that’s long gone, but I never stopped hoping we’d find each other again."

Tears welled in Avni’s eyes. She looked up at Neil, who was watching her with a mixture of hope and uncertainty.

“I’m sorry I never wrote back,” she whispered. “I was afraid. Afraid of what it would mean, afraid of feeling something I wasn’t ready to face.”

Neil nodded. “I understand. But I never stopped believing that one day, we’d talk about all this.”

In that moment, as they sat together, the years between them seemed to disappear. The past was no longer something to regret but something to cherish.

Avni closed the notebook and smiled at Neil. “Maybe we can start again,” she said softly.

Neil’s smile was all the answer she needed.

And so, their summer of letters began again—not written on paper, but spoken between them, each word a promise to never let go.
