Echoes in the Woods

A group of friends—Aarav, Ria, Karan, Meera, and Vani—decided to spend their long weekend at a secluded lakeside cabin, tucked away in the hills of Himachal Pradesh. The cabin, with its rustic charm, had no Wi-Fi and very little cell service, making it the perfect getaway from the busy world.

The lake, a serene and tranquil body of water, lay just a short walk from the cabin, surrounded by dense forest and towering trees. The group arrived late afternoon, just in time to watch the sunset reflect off the water. They were excited for the weekend ahead—campfires, hiking, and the simple pleasures of spending time together in nature.

The First Night

That evening, after a hearty dinner, they sat around the fire pit, telling stories and reminiscing about old times. The air was thick with the sounds of the forest—crickets, rustling leaves, and the occasional hoot of an owl. But as the night deepened, something unsettling started to stir in the air.

Ria, who had always been the brave one, stood up from the circle. "I’m going for a walk down to the lake," she said with a grin. "I’ll be back in a few minutes."

Aarav, the cautious one, warned her, “Don’t go alone. It’s getting dark.”

But Ria laughed, “Relax. I’ll be fine.” She walked off into the growing shadows.

The Disappearance

An hour passed, and Ria still hadn’t returned. The group tried calling her phone, but there was no signal. Aarav, Karan, and Meera decided to go search for her, while Vani stayed behind at the cabin, anxiously waiting.

The path to the lake was narrow and winding, with the trees pressing in on either side, their branches creaking in the wind. They called out for Ria, but there was no response. When they finally reached the lake, they saw nothing but the still water reflecting the moonlight.

But something was wrong. Aarav spotted a small boat, gently rocking by the shore. The sight of it sent a chill down his spine. They searched the area, but there was no sign of Ria.

Karan’s voice trembled as he whispered, “She can’t have just disappeared. There’s no way...”

Suddenly, from the middle of the lake, a faint voice echoed, “Help me…”

The group froze. It was Ria’s voice, but it sounded distant and distorted, as if coming from deep under the water. Before anyone could react, the sound stopped.

The Whispering Forest

The friends hurried back to the cabin, but Ria was still nowhere to be found. Vani was frantic, her eyes wide with fear as she stared at the forest. “Something’s wrong,” she said. “I have a bad feeling about this.”

The night was growing colder, and the forest seemed to close in on them. Aarav, determined to find his friend, suggested they search the woods, but Meera refused. “No, we should call the police. This place feels… cursed.”

With no cell service, there was little they could do. They huddled in the cabin, but sleep was impossible. The air grew heavy, and the whispers began. Faint, soft voices that seemed to come from all directions. Aarav tried to ignore them, but they grew louder, more insistent.

The Lake’s Secret

The next morning, they found a strange, weathered map on the table, one none of them had placed there. The map depicted the area around the lake, with a small ‘X’ marked near the center. The handwriting on the map was jagged, as if written in haste.

“I’m going to check this out,” Aarav said, determined to find Ria.

The others hesitated but decided to follow. They ventured into the woods once more, following the map. As they neared the marked spot, they found an old, abandoned well hidden beneath a thick blanket of vines.

Aarav knelt by the well, staring into its dark depths. Suddenly, a faint voice whispered from the shadows, “Help me…”

It was Ria’s voice again.

“Ria?” Aarav shouted, but no response came.

Karan took a step back, his face pale. “There’s something down there… something in the water.”

Without warning, the earth beneath them trembled, and the well seemed to pulse, as if alive. The wind howled through the trees, and the whispers grew louder, surrounding them.

The Final Twist

The group tried to flee, but the forest wouldn’t let them go. The trees seemed to move, the path to the cabin lost in the maze of twisted branches. And then, from behind them, the figure of Ria appeared, her face gaunt and her eyes black as night.

“You shouldn’t have come,” she said, her voice distorted, barely human.

The group backed away, fear gripping their hearts.

“What happened to you?” Meera cried out.

Ria’s lips curled into a twisted smile. “The lake… it takes what it wants. It whispered to me, just as it whispered to all of you.”

And then the whispers began, louder now, from the trees, the ground, the very air around them. Aarav tried to run, but the ground beneath his feet seemed to shift, pulling him toward the lake.

The last thing he saw was the reflection of the lake’s surface, rippling with something far darker than water.

The Final Echo

When the authorities arrived days later, they found no trace of the group. The cabin stood empty, with only the whispers of the forest to keep it company. Some say the lake still calls out to those who wander too close—its waters dark and endless, hiding the secrets of those who never return.

And every now and then, if you listen closely, you can hear the faint sound of whispers on the wind, beckoning you into the woods.
