Chapter 9: Dreams of Power

The night was unnaturally still, the kind of silence that felt oppressive rather than peaceful. Kael lay on a cot in the healer’s hut, staring at the ceiling. The events of the day—Theryn’s warning, the villagers’ quiet resilience—played over and over in his mind like a relentless tide.

Beneath his shirt, the shard pulsed faintly, as if alive. He placed a hand over it, feeling its strange warmth seep into his skin. Despite his exhaustion, sleep refused to come easily.

Finally, his eyes closed, and the world faded.

Scene 1: The Golden Throne

Kael found himself standing on a vast, sunlit plain. The ground beneath his feet shimmered like liquid gold, and the horizon stretched endlessly in all directions. Before him rose a magnificent throne, crafted from gleaming metal and adorned with intricate carvings that seemed to shift and writhe when he looked too closely.

As he approached, he noticed figures kneeling in a circle around the throne. Their heads were bowed, their faces obscured by shadows, but their voices were clear.

“Hail the Ascendant King,” they chanted. “Bearer of the Protocol, savior of the realm.”

Kael’s breath caught. The figures turned toward him in unison, their hollow eyes locking onto his. Their voices became a deafening roar.

“You are chosen, Kael Strix.”

He stumbled back, his hand instinctively moving to his sword. But when he looked down, he no longer held his blade. Instead, a brilliant staff of golden light materialized in his hand, its power coursing through him like a storm.

The voice of the shard echoed in his mind. This is your destiny. The power to end suffering, to reshape the world. Take the throne, Kael. Embrace what you were meant to be.

Scene 2: Visions of a Perfect World

Kael blinked, and the plain dissolved. He stood in a bustling city, its streets lined with smiling faces. Children played freely, and merchants called out cheerfully from their stalls.

“Look at what you can create,” the shard whispered.

Kael turned and saw himself—older, clad in resplendent armor that shimmered with golden light. This version of him stood at the head of an army, their banners flying high. The people cheered his name, their voices filled with reverence.

The older Kael turned to him, his eyes glowing faintly. “This is what we can achieve,” the figure said, his voice calm and resolute. “With the shard’s power, we can bring peace to the world. No more wars. No more pain.”

Kael’s chest tightened. It was everything he had ever wanted: a chance to protect, to rebuild, to lead.

But as he reached out to the vision, the glow of the shard flared, and the scene twisted.

Scene 3: The Cost of Power

The perfect city crumbled before Kael’s eyes. The smiling faces turned to screams as the streets were consumed by flames. The older version of himself stood atop a mountain of ash and bodies, his once-golden armor stained with blood.

“You were weak,” the older Kael spat, his voice now cold and unrecognizable. “You hesitated, and this is what it cost. But we learned. We sacrificed what was necessary.”

Kael shook his head, stepping back. “No! This isn’t what I want. This isn’t who I am!”

The older Kael raised the golden staff, its light now blinding and oppressive. “You will become me. You cannot escape it.”

The shard’s voice grew louder, drowning out all else. This is your truth. Accept it, or perish.

Scene 4: A Battle for the Soul

Kael dropped to his knees, clutching his head as the voices of the shard and his future self clashed within him. The golden light surrounded him, pressing down like a physical weight.

“You’re wrong,” Kael growled, forcing himself to his feet. “Power without purpose is destruction. I won’t let this thing turn me into a monster.”

The vision of his older self sneered. “Then you are weak. And the world will burn without you.”

Kael gritted his teeth, gripping the shard beneath his shirt. “I don’t need to be a god to protect people. I’ll fight with everything I have—as myself.”

The golden light flickered, then shattered like glass. Kael was thrown backward into the void, his body tumbling through darkness.

Scene 5: Awakening and Resolve

Kael awoke with a gasp, drenched in sweat. The healer’s hut was dim, lit only by the faint glow of the dying fire. His hand trembled as he touched the shard, which was now silent and cold.

He sat up, his heart pounding as he replayed the dream in his mind. The shard had shown him a future of unparalleled power—but also unparalleled destruction.

Kael clenched his fists. “I’ll prove you wrong,” he muttered to the shard. “I don’t need to lose myself to wield your power. I’ll find another way.”

As he rose and strapped on his sword, a new resolve burned within him. Whatever trials lay ahead, he would face them—not as a god, but as Kael Strix.
