Chapter 6: The Protocol Awakens (Part 2: Lyran’s Backstory and Training)

Scene 1: Lyran’s Past Unveiled

Kael sat by the healer’s fire, his exhaustion evident. Across from him, Lyran observed him with a measured gaze, her staff resting against her shoulder.

“Why do you know so much about the shard?” Kael asked, breaking the silence. “You’ve seen this before, haven’t you?”

Lyran hesitated, her expression darkening. “It’s not something I talk about lightly,” she said, her voice quiet.

“You’re asking me to trust you,” Kael pressed. “At least give me something to work with.”

Lyran sighed, leaning back as the firelight flickered across her face. “I was born in Altheris—a kingdom long gone now. My family served as keepers of the ancient shards, sworn to protect them from those who would misuse their power.”

Kael frowned. “What happened?”

Her eyes hardened. “A faction called the Order of Aethyr rose from within our ranks. They believed the shards were divine gifts meant to elevate humanity beyond its limits. My family tried to stop them.” She paused, her voice laced with bitterness. “We failed. The Protocol activated in one of their leaders—a man named Veyrik. He became unstoppable, and Altheris burned.”

Kael leaned forward. “And you survived?”

“Barely,” Lyran admitted. “I fled with one shard—the same one you now carry. For years, I’ve been searching for a way to control its power, to ensure no one suffers the same fate as my family.”

Scene 2: The Shard’s Challenges Begin

The next morning, Lyran led Kael to a secluded glade outside the village. The air was crisp, and the ground was littered with fallen leaves.

“We’ll start here,” she said, planting her staff into the earth. “The shard’s energy is volatile, and it will push you to your limits. You need to learn control, or it will consume you.”

Kael nodded, his resolve firm. “What do I do?”

Lyran gestured to the clearing. “Focus on the shard. Feel its energy without letting it overwhelm you. Channel it into your movements.”

Kael closed his eyes, his hand resting over the shard beneath his shirt. He felt its warmth spread through him, a steady pulse that grew stronger with each breath.

The energy flared suddenly, and Kael staggered as golden light radiated from his hands.

“Steady!” Lyran barked. “Don’t fight it—guide it.”

Kael gritted his teeth, his body trembling as he struggled to contain the power. His sword glowed faintly as he swung, slicing through the air with unnatural speed.

But the shard pushed harder, sending waves of energy surging through him. He cried out, collapsing to his knees.

“Enough!” Lyran rushed forward, placing her hand on his shoulder. The shard’s glow dimmed, and Kael gasped for air.

“It’s like it’s alive,” Kael said, his voice shaking. “It doesn’t want to be controlled.”

“It doesn’t,” Lyran said grimly. “The shard tests its host. It will exploit your fears, your doubts, and your anger. Until you overcome them, you’ll never master it.”

Scene 3: Facing the Shadows Within

That night, as Kael rested by the fire, the shard’s whispers returned.

You are weak, the voice taunted. You cannot control me.

Kael’s vision darkened, and he found himself standing in a vast void. Shadows swirled around him, taking the forms of the people he’d failed to protect—his old comrades, the villagers, even his family.

“You’re not real,” Kael growled, gripping his sword.

Are we not? the shadows hissed. You carry us with you. Every failure, every death. You cannot escape us.

The shadows lunged, their icy grips dragging him down. Kael thrashed, his sword glowing faintly as he struggled to break free.

“Control the shard!” Lyran’s voice echoed faintly in his mind. “It’s a part of you now!”

Kael closed his eyes, focusing on the shard’s energy. Slowly, he pushed back against the shadows, the golden light within him flaring brighter.

“I’m not defined by my failures,” he said, his voice steady. “I’ll carry them—but they won’t break me.”

The void shattered, and Kael awoke with a start, the shard’s glow dimming beneath his shirt.

Scene 4: Progress and Bonding

Over the next few days, Kael trained relentlessly under Lyran’s guidance. She pushed him to his limits, forcing him to balance the shard’s energy with his physical and mental focus.

At one point, Kael collapsed after a particularly grueling session. Lyran offered him water, her stern demeanor softening.

“You’re improving,” she said.

Kael chuckled weakly. “I feel like I’ve been run over by a war wagon.”

“That’s progress,” she said with a faint smile.

Kael hesitated before asking, “Why do you care so much about helping me? You could’ve just taken the shard and left.”

Lyran’s expression grew serious. “Because you remind me of my brother. He activated the Protocol, too... and it destroyed him. I won’t let that happen to you.”

Kael nodded, understanding the weight behind her words.

Scene 5: A New Resolve

By the end of the week, Kael stood in the clearing, his sword glowing faintly as he moved through a series of precise strikes. The shard’s energy flowed through him, no longer wild and erratic but steady and controlled.

“You’re ready for the next step,” Lyran said, watching him closely.

Kael lowered his sword, his gaze steady. “Whatever it takes.”

But even as he spoke, he felt the shard’s presence deep within him—a reminder that the real battle was far from over.
