Scene 1: A Hero’s Unease
Kael sat on a fallen tree near the village edge, sharpening his sword. The events of the previous night played on a loop in his mind: the surge of power, the way his body moved beyond his own control, and the way Serak’s words lingered.
“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.”
His thoughts were interrupted by Bran, who approached hesitantly.
“Kael,” Bran began, his voice low. “They’re saying you’re a hero.”
Kael scoffed, not looking up. “A hero doesn’t put an entire village at risk.”
Bran frowned. “You saved us. That’s what matters.”
Kael’s grip tightened on his blade. “For now. But more will come. They always do.”

Scene 2: The Shard’s Secrets
The young woman, who introduced herself as Arlyn, stood with Kael in the healer’s hut. The shard glowed faintly on the table between them.
“You need to understand what’s happening to you,” she said.
Kael crossed his arms. “Start talking, then.”
Arlyn traced her fingers over the shard, her voice soft. “The Ascension Protocol is ancient—created by those who sought to control the balance of power in the world. It doesn’t just grant abilities. It changes you.”
Kael frowned. “Changes how?”
“It amplifies your strengths, but it also exposes your weaknesses. The more you use it, the harder it becomes to control. That’s why it’s dangerous.”
Kael leaned forward, his tone sharp. “And what happens if I can’t control it?”
Arlyn hesitated. “Then it will destroy you—and anyone near you.”
Kael’s jaw tightened. “So, I’m a ticking time bomb.”
“No,” Arlyn said firmly. “You’re a warrior. And warriors learn to master their weapons. The shard is no different.”

Scene 3: Training Begins
Arlyn led Kael to a clearing just outside the village, where the air was crisp and quiet.
“To control the shard, you need to understand its nature,” Arlyn explained. “It responds to intent. Focus your thoughts, and it will guide your actions.”
Kael frowned. “And if my thoughts are chaos?”
“Then you’ll fight like chaos,” she replied with a smirk. “Now, try this.”
She placed a small stone on a tree stump and stepped back. “Focus on the shard. Picture the stone shattering.”
Kael closed his eyes, feeling the shard’s faint hum in his chest. He extended his hand toward the stone. At first, nothing happened. Then, a surge of energy shot through him, and the stone exploded into dust.
Arlyn grinned. “See? Progress.”
Kael, breathing heavily, shook his head. “It’s too unpredictable. What if I lose control in battle?”
“That’s why we keep practicing,” she said. “Until it becomes as natural as breathing.”

Scene 4: A Glimpse of the Enemy
As night fell, Kael stood watch at the village edge. The forest seemed darker than usual, the trees looming like silent sentinels.
Bran joined him, his lantern casting a warm glow. “You think they’ll come back?”
Kael nodded. “It’s only a matter of time. Serak was just a scout compared to what’s out there.”
Bran swallowed hard. “You think we’re ready?”
Kael’s eyes were fixed on the shadows. “No. But we will be.”
A faint rustling caught his attention. He drew his sword, motioning for Bran to stay back.
From the darkness emerged a lone figure—a cloaked man with silver hair and piercing eyes. He stopped just out of sword’s reach, his hands raised in surrender.
“I mean no harm,” the man said, his voice calm. “I’ve come to speak with the one chosen by the Protocol.”
Kael’s grip tightened. “Who are you?”
The man smiled faintly. “A friend—or an enemy. That depends on you.”

Scene 5: The Stranger’s Warning
The cloaked man, who introduced himself as Lyran, sat by the village fire, his demeanor calm but calculating.
“The Ascension Protocol is more than just power,” Lyran began. “It’s a key. And the Shadow Marked aren’t the only ones looking for it.”
Kael leaned forward. “Then who else is?”
“Everyone,” Lyran replied simply. “Kings, warlords, rogue factions. The Protocol represents control over life itself. And you, my friend, are the spark that could ignite a war.”
Kael frowned. “Then why are you here?”
“To offer my help,” Lyran said, his tone genuine. “You’ll need allies if you’re going to survive what’s coming.”
Arlyn, sitting nearby, narrowed her eyes. “And why should we trust you?”
Lyran met her gaze. “Because I know what the Protocol can do—and how to stop those who seek it.”
Kael studied Lyran for a moment, then sheathed his sword. “Fine. But if you’re lying, you won’t leave this village alive.”
Lyran smirked. “Fair enough.”

Closing Scene: A New Alliance
As the fire crackled, the three of them discussed their next steps. The air was heavy with tension, but for the first time, Kael felt the faintest glimmer of hope.
He didn’t trust Lyran—not yet. But if what the man said was true, Kael would need all the help he could get.
