Chapter 5: Whispers of the Pursued (Continued)

Scene 4: The Shadow Marked Attack

The howl was followed by a chilling silence. Kael remained motionless, his sword drawn, his eyes scanning the tree line. Moments later, Bran scrambled back to the tower, panting.

“Gared’s gathering the men,” Bran said breathlessly. “What do you see?”

“Shadows,” Kael muttered, his grip tightening on his sword. “Moving too fast for scouts or hunters. They’re here.”

Before Bran could respond, a low growl rumbled from the forest. Then another. The sound grew, echoing as more joined—a chorus of unnatural snarls.

From the darkness, a figure emerged. At first glance, it appeared human, but as it stepped into the moonlight, its grotesque features became clear. Its skin was pale and cracked, its limbs unnaturally long, and its eyes glowed faintly red.

“What in the gods’ name is that?” Bran whispered, his voice trembling.

Kael didn’t answer. He was already moving.

“Get down there!” Kael barked. “Sound the alarm!”

Bran hesitated, but the urgency in Kael’s voice snapped him into action. He slid down the ladder and sprinted toward the village center, yelling at the top of his lungs.

Scene 5: Battle at the Gate

Kael leapt from the tower and landed with a thud. The village gate stood ahead—a crude but sturdy barricade reinforced with sharpened logs. Several villagers, armed with makeshift weapons, gathered behind it, their faces pale with fear.

“Hold the line!” Kael commanded.

The first creature charged the gate, slamming into it with inhuman strength. The wood creaked but held. Kael darted forward, his blade flashing in the moonlight as he thrust it through the creature’s chest.

It let out a guttural screech before collapsing.

More came. The villagers stood frozen, staring at the monsters in terror.

“Don’t just stand there!” Kael shouted. “Fight, or we’re all dead!”

His words jolted them into action. Gared, armed with an axe, charged forward with a roar, swinging at the nearest creature. Others followed, their fear turning to desperation.

The battle was chaos. The Shadow Marked fought with savage ferocity, their movements erratic and unpredictable. Kael moved like a storm, cutting through their ranks, his blade striking with precision.

Despite their bravery, the villagers were outmatched. One by one, they fell, the creatures overwhelming them with sheer numbers.

Kael fought harder, his mind racing. We can’t hold them off. Not like this.

Scene 6: A Desperate Retreat

“Fall back!” Kael yelled, his voice cutting through the chaos. “To the square!”

The survivors retreated, dragging the wounded as the creatures swarmed the gate. Kael stood at the rear, covering their escape.

In the square, the villagers formed a tighter defensive line. Mirel stood near the injured woman, her hands trembling as she clutched a dagger.

Kael approached her, blood dripping from his blade. “We can’t hold them here. Is there anywhere safe?”

Mirel shook her head. “Not unless we flee the village.”

The young woman, pale and weak, struggled to sit up. “There’s no running from them. They won’t stop.”

Kael glared at her. “Then what do you suggest? Let them slaughter us all?”

She met his gaze, her voice steady despite her fear. “I can stop them. But I need my shard of the Ascension Protocol.”

“Where is it?” Kael demanded.

“In my pack,” she said. “Hidden in the healer’s hut.”

Kael turned to Gared. “Hold the line here. I’ll get it.”

“You’re mad!” Gared snapped. “You’ll never make it back!”

“Then you’d better hope I do,” Kael said grimly.

Scene 7: The Healer’s Hut

Kael sprinted through the narrow streets, the sounds of battle echoing behind him. He reached the healer’s hut and pushed the door open, his eyes scanning the room.

The pack was under the cot. He grabbed it and rummaged through it until his hand closed around a smooth, glowing shard.

Before he could leave, a snarl sounded behind him. He turned just in time to see one of the creatures lunging at him.

Kael ducked, slashing upward with his sword. The blade bit deep, and the creature collapsed, but its shriek drew others.

Kael bolted from the hut, the shard clutched tightly in his hand.

Closing Scene: The Square’s Last Stand

Kael returned to the square, tossing the shard to the woman. “Do whatever you need to do. Fast.”

She held the shard, her eyes closed, as she began to chant in a language Kael didn’t recognize.

The creatures hesitated, their movements faltering. Kael and the others pressed the advantage, cutting them down as the woman’s voice grew louder.

With a final word, the shard exploded in light, and the remaining creatures screamed as they dissolved into ash.

Silence fell over the square. The villagers stared in disbelief, their weapons still raised.

Kael turned to the woman, his expression unreadable. “Start talking. Now.”
