Chapter 4: Shadows of the Past

The forest outside the village, where Kael patrols at dawn, seeking clarity and preparing for what might come next.

Kael moved silently through the dense forest, his footsteps soft against the damp earth. The air was cool, filled with the faint rustle of leaves and the distant chirping of birds. Despite the peaceful setting, his mind was a storm.

The encounter with Scarlin’s bandits had shaken something loose inside him—memories he’d buried, choices he’d tried to forget. He didn’t patrol the forest out of necessity; he needed the solitude.

As he stopped by a shallow stream to refill his waterskin, a voice broke the silence.

“Still can’t sleep, can you?”

Kael turned sharply, his hand instinctively going to his sword. Emerging from the shadows was Harvin, the village elder, leaning on his cane.

“You shouldn’t be out here,” Kael said, his tone sharp. “It’s not safe.”

Harvin chuckled, though his eyes held a knowing sadness. “I’ve lived through worse dangers than a quiet forest, Kael. I came to find you. Figured you’d be out here, wrestling with the ghosts of your past.”

Kael’s grip on the hilt relaxed, though his posture remained tense. “You don’t know anything about my past.”

“Maybe not the details,” Harvin replied, stepping closer. “But I know the weight of regret. It’s written all over you.”

Kael’s jaw tightened as he turned away, staring into the rippling water. “What do you want, Harvin?”

“To remind you that the past doesn’t have to define you,” the elder said simply. “Whatever happened before, it doesn’t change the fact that you’ve given this village hope. That matters.”

Kael scoffed, his voice bitter. “Hope? You think hope will stop the next group of bandits? Or the ones after that? I did what I had to. That’s all.”

Harvin leaned heavily on his cane, his expression thoughtful. “You think what you did last night was just about stopping bandits? You showed people they’re not powerless. That they can fight back. That’s a rare thing in this world.”

Kael didn’t respond, his gaze fixed on the water.

Scene Shift: A Disturbance in the Forest

Before Harvin could speak again, a faint rustling came from the trees nearby. Kael’s head snapped up, and his hand went to his sword once more.

“Stay here,” Kael ordered, his voice low and commanding.

He moved swiftly, his movements silent as a shadow. The noise grew louder—a mix of hurried footsteps and muffled grunts. As Kael crept closer, he spotted a figure stumbling through the underbrush, their clothes torn and bloodied.

The figure collapsed to their knees, gasping for breath. Kael emerged from the shadows, his sword drawn.

“Who are you?” Kael demanded, his voice cold.

The figure looked up, revealing a young woman with piercing green eyes, her face streaked with dirt and blood. “Help... please...” she gasped, before collapsing.

Kael sheathed his sword and moved to her side, checking her for injuries. She had a deep gash on her leg and several bruises, but nothing life-threatening.

“Who did this to you?” Kael asked, his tone urgent.

The woman’s eyes fluttered open, her voice barely a whisper. “They’re coming... a group... dangerous... looking for someone...”

Kael’s expression darkened. He lifted her carefully and began making his way back to Harvin.

Scene Shift: The Village Healer’s Hut

Kael carried the woman into the healer’s hut, where an older woman named Mirel was already preparing supplies. Harvin had returned ahead of him to alert her.

“Lay her here,” Mirel instructed, motioning to a straw-covered cot.

Kael did as he was told, then stepped back, his arms crossed. “She said someone was after her. A dangerous group. I need to know more.”

Mirel shot him a sharp look. “You’ll have to wait until she wakes. Right now, she needs rest.”

Kael nodded, though his mind was already racing.

Scene Shift: Village Square, Evening

Later that day, Kael stood in the square, addressing Gared and a small group of villagers.

“We found someone in the forest—a woman. She says a dangerous group is after her. We don’t know who or why yet, but we need to prepare.”

Gared frowned, his arms crossed. “More trouble? Just what we need.”

“This isn’t just trouble,” Kael said firmly. “Whoever she’s running from could already be close. We need scouts watching the forest and guards stationed at every entrance to the village.”

“And if it’s nothing?” Gared challenged.

“Then we’ll have wasted a night,” Kael replied coldly. “But if it’s not, and we do nothing, this village could burn.”

The group murmured in agreement, and Gared reluctantly nodded. “Fine. I’ll gather the men.”

Closing Scene:

That night, Kael sat outside his cabin, sharpening his blade by the light of the moon. His thoughts were heavy as he replayed the woman’s words in his mind.

They’re coming.

He didn’t know who they were or what they wanted, but one thing was certain: the peace of the village was hanging by a thread, and it was only a matter of time before it snapped.

Kael’s grip tightened on his blade. He wasn’t sure if he could save the village again, but he knew one thing for certain: he would fight until his last breath.
