Wati recounted her experience since her first night in the house. Initially, she dismissed it as a mere bad dream due to forgetting to say her prayers before sleep. However, the dream persisted relentlessly. She hesitated to share her experience, fearing her boss might think she was making it up.
As Wati kept it to herself, her fear intensified. The sensation of being stepped on in her dream felt real, as if it had transpired in reality. Leaving her job was not an option either, as Andini had hired her through an agency for a guaranteed two-year contract. Breaking the contract meant facing a penalty, payable to the agency. Consequently, Wati had no choice but to endure the nightly torment, torn between confessing and the fear of being disbelieved or ridiculed by Andini or Hendra.
The fear Wati harbored towards the tall, dark figure was overwhelming. Although she had never seen its face, the mere sight of its back sent shivers down her spine. Last night's encounter had been particularly terrifying, pushing Wati to her breaking point.
"Please, have a seat and tell me everything. I can't stand for too long," Andini said gently, sensing Wati's distress.
"Yes, Ma'am," Wati replied, taking a seat on the sofa, her face pale.
"You've been experiencing this since your first night?" Andini asked for clarification.
"Yes, I went to bed around eleven. As I was about to fall asleep, it appeared out of nowhere, pinning me down on the chest. It was so heavy that I could barely breathe," Wati said, swallowing hard as terror crept up her throat.
"And then?"
"I don't know what it was saying. Its voice was a low growl, barely audible because of the large scar across its neck! It kept pressing down on me until I finally managed to recite Ayat Kursi," Wati explained.
"What kind of spirit was it? I've never encountered anything like that while living here," Andini muttered.
"But, Ma'am! It vanished when Miss Salsa and her husband stayed over. That night, it didn't step on me," Wati recalled Davin's visit.
"Really? Could it be afraid of Davin?" Andini wondered if Davin's spiritual guardian was the reason.
"I believe so. It didn't appear from eleven that night until five in the morning," Wati replied with conviction.
"You should move to the guest room for now. We'll hold a Quran recitation gathering soon," Andini suggested, not wanting her helper to live in fear.
"When will that be, Ma'am?" Wati asked, wanting to be prepared.
"We can do it this evening. I'll order food. Just focus on cleaning the house, so it's presentable when the guests arrive," Andini instructed.
"Yes, Ma'am," Wati agreed, immediately getting to work.
Andini remained deep in thought. If her helper was experiencing such disturbances, perhaps Hendra's house was truly haunted. She recalled that pregnant women were often susceptible to supernatural encounters, but she never neglected her prayers for protection.
"Hello, Assalamualaikum, An!" Purnama greeted as she answered her phone.
"Waalaikumsalam, where are you, Mbak Pur?" Andini responded with pleasantries.
"I'm out of town, taking a short vacation while it's the end of the year."
"Oh, I see. Sorry for interrupting," Andini apologized.
"No worries at all! Is everything alright with your pregnancy?" Purnama enquired.
"The baby's fine, Mbak! I can feel the little one moving. It's just that there seems to be a slight problem with the house."
"What kind of problem?"
"Well, it turns out that my helper has been haunted by a tall, imposing figure every night since she started working here. It even steps on her."
"Tell her to switch rooms for the time being. Once I'm back, I'll visit you. In the meantime, don't neglect your prayers and recite the Quran every night, even if it's just a little," Purnama advised.
"I'm planning to hold a Quran recitation gathering this evening, Mbak," Andini informed her.
"That's good. Hopefully, everything will be fine," Purnama expressed her hope.
"Alright, enjoy your vacation." Andini ended the call.
Purnama was on vacation with her family, taking a well-deserved break. Dealing with endless supernatural issues could be draining, and she needed this time to recharge. Andini respected her decision, knowing that constant exposure to such matters could have adverse effects.
Andini got up and walked towards Wati's room at the back of the house. Curiosity got the better of her as she wanted to see the room where Wati had been experiencing these nightly terrors. Since moving in, she hadn't ventured to the back of the house, not out of arrogance but due to her delicate condition. It was only now that she stepped inside and observed Wati's room. Wati was praying, draped in a black prayer garment.
"Even her prayer garment is black!" Andini thought to herself.
Since Wati was in prayer, Andini decided to leave. However, she suddenly realized it was half past twelve in the afternoon. What prayer was Wati performing at this hour? And her praying direction was wrong.
"Wati..."
Wati, still in prayer, began reciting something incomprehensible. Her body contorted in unnatural ways, sending chills down Andini's spine.
BAM!
"Aaaahhh, help!" Andini screamed in terror as the door slammed shut.
"Hroooookkk, hroooookk," a guttural sound emanated from Wati's mouth, her face still hidden. Andini was petrified. Never before had she experienced such horror.
Crack, crack.
Wati's body twisted and turned, as if about to break. Andini watched in terror as Wati's size grew, becoming impossibly large and tall. Panic seized her; she was trapped with a terrifying entity.
"Oh God, help meeee! Help, Honey!" Andini cried out for her husband.
"Hohohooooo, your flesh will be mine," the monstrous figure growled.
"Honeyyy, help me, Honeyyy!" Andini's voice escalated into hysterics.
"Iwaaaak, I want to devour the iwaaaak and the endok," the creature uttered.
Andini's heart pounded in her chest. She understood. "Endok" meant egg – a term used in the supernatural context to refer to an unborn child. It was after her baby. In that moment of sheer terror, as she desperately called out for her husband, Andini lost control of her bladder.
