The moment Ria stepped through the portal, everything around her shifted. The world seemed to collapse in on itself, and she was swallowed by an overwhelming darkness. There was no light, no sound, just a heavy, suffocating silence that made her chest tighten. She tried to move, but her feet felt like they were rooted to the spot. Panic rose within her as she felt the weight of the darkness press in from all sides.
Suddenly, the silence broke. A soft voice echoed in the vast emptiness, familiar yet distant. It called her name, a soft whisper that seemed to come from every direction.
“Ria...”
Her heart skipped a beat. The voice was unmistakable.
“Mom?” she whispered, though her voice trembled with uncertainty. She hadn’t heard her mother’s voice in years—not since she had passed away. The pain of losing her had been unbearable, something Ria had buried deep inside her heart. But now, the voice seemed to reach her from the depths of this strange place, as if her mother was calling out to her once more.
“Mom!” Ria cried out, her voice shaking. “Is that really you?”
The darkness parted, and she found herself standing in a familiar room—her childhood home. The walls were adorned with old photographs, the floor creaking beneath her feet. The scent of her mother’s perfume filled the air, and she could hear the soft hum of the old ceiling fan. Everything was just as it had been when she was a child, when her world had been whole.
And then, there she was. Her mother, standing in the doorway, smiling warmly at her. Ria felt a rush of emotion flood through her chest. She hadn’t seen her mother’s face in so long, hadn’t felt the comforting embrace of her arms. It was almost too much to bear.
“Ria,” her mother said, her voice as gentle as Ria remembered. “I’ve missed you so much.”
Tears welled in Ria’s eyes as she took a hesitant step forward. “Mom, I... I don’t understand. You’re gone. How is this possible?”
Her mother’s smile faltered for a brief moment, and then she took a step forward, her hand reaching out to Ria. “I know, sweetheart. I know. But I’m here now, and I need you to listen to me.”
Ria’s heart raced. This couldn’t be real. This had to be some trick, some illusion created by the island. But it felt so real—her mother’s presence, her warmth. The grief that had been buried deep inside her threatened to break free.
“What do you need me to do?” Ria whispered, her voice barely audible. She could feel the tightness in her chest, the ache of longing that she had carried for so long.
Her mother stepped closer, her expression serious now. “You’ve been carrying so much, Ria. The pain of losing me, the guilt, the fear of being alone. But you have to let go of all of that. You can’t move forward until you do.”
Ria’s chest tightened. “Let go? How? How am I supposed to let go of everything? I don’t know how to live without you, Mom. I never did.”
Her mother’s eyes softened, and she placed a hand on Ria’s shoulder. “I know it’s hard, but you’ve already done so much, Ria. You’ve kept going even when you didn’t want to. You’ve been strong, stronger than you realize. But to face what’s ahead, you have to forgive yourself. You have to forgive me.”
Ria blinked, tears blurring her vision. “Forgive you? Mom, I never—”
“Yes, you did,” her mother interrupted gently. “You’ve blamed yourself for so many things. You’ve carried the weight of our loss, thinking it was your fault. But it wasn’t. You need to let go of that burden.”
Ria’s breath caught in her throat. She had never realized it before, but her mother was right. She had blamed herself for not being there enough, for not being able to stop her mother’s illness, for not being able to say goodbye. The guilt had festered inside her, growing until it threatened to consume her. She had never truly let go of it.
“You don’t have to carry that weight anymore, Ria,” her mother said softly. “You are not alone. You’ve always been strong, and you always will be.”
Ria felt the tears fall freely now, a mix of grief and relief washing over her. She had been holding onto the pain for so long, afraid to let it go, afraid that if she did, she would forget her mother, forget all the love they had shared. But in this moment, standing before her, she realized that her mother’s love would never fade. It wasn’t something that could be erased by time or by the trials of this island.
With trembling hands, Ria reached out to her mother, but just as her fingers brushed her mother’s hand, the vision flickered, and the room began to fade. Her mother’s face softened in a sad smile.
“Remember, Ria. You are stronger than you know. Let go, and you will be free.”
“Mom, please don’t go!” Ria cried, her heart shattering.
But as she reached out again, the vision disappeared entirely. The room faded to darkness, and Ria was left standing in the void, the weight of her emotions threatening to drown her.
And then, suddenly, the darkness lifted. The oppressive silence was broken by the sound of her breath, ragged and unsteady. Ria was back in the temple, her heart racing in her chest, the weight of what she had just experienced heavy in her mind.
The cloaked figure stood before her, silent and unmoving. “You have passed the Trial of Heart,” he said simply.
Ria staggered back, still reeling from the emotional intensity of the trial. She had faced her greatest fear, her deepest sorrow, and come through the other side. But the trial had been more than just about strength—it had been about healing, about facing the parts of herself she had buried for so long.
“Are you alright?” Julian’s voice broke through her thoughts, and she turned to see him and Ren standing behind her, concern written on their faces.
“I’m... I’m fine,” Ria said, though her voice trembled. She wiped her eyes quickly, trying to regain her composure. “I just... needed to face something. Something I’ve been carrying for a long time.”
Ren placed a hand on her shoulder. “You did it, Ria. You got through it.”
Ria nodded, but her mind was still spinning. She had passed, but at what cost? What would the next trial hold?
The cloaked figure gestured toward the next path, and without another word, he turned to leave. “The Trial of Mind awaits.”
Ria glanced at Ren and Julian, her heart heavy but resolved. They had come this far. She couldn’t back down now. The journey was far from over.
And whatever lay ahead, she would face it.
