Chapter 20: A Threat Revealed
The calm of their camp was shattered just before dawn. Kaelin awoke to the distant sound of footsteps—deliberate, calculated, and far too many to ignore. He jolted upright, his heart racing, and nudged Anara awake.
“Something’s coming,” he whispered.
Anara’s instincts kicked in immediately. She grabbed her daggers, her sharp eyes scanning the shadows. Verrin was already awake, sword in hand, his expression grim.
“They’ve found us,” Verrin muttered.
“Who?” Kaelin asked, his voice hushed.
Before Verrin could answer, figures emerged from the treeline. Cloaked in dark robes and armed with gleaming weapons, the intruders moved with precision, their faces hidden by masks. They encircled the camp, cutting off any escape.
Anara cursed under her breath. “Let me guess. These aren’t friendly treasure hunters?”
“They’re Seekers,” Verrin said, his voice low. “Servants of the shadow. They’ve been searching for the shards—and now they’ve tracked us.”
The leader of the group stepped forward, his mask a polished black surface that reflected the faint glow of their dying fire. “Kaelin Ardyn,” the figure said, his voice calm but commanding. “You carry what does not belong to you. Surrender the shards, and we will spare your companions.”
Kaelin stood, his fists clenched. “The shards belong to no one. And they’re staying out of your hands.”
The leader tilted his head slightly. “Brave, but foolish. You don’t understand the power you’ve meddled with. The Heart is merely a fragment of what lies beyond. Give us the shards, and we can ensure their true potential is realized.”
“By destroying everything in your path?” Verrin growled, stepping between Kaelin and the leader. “I’ve seen what you Seekers do. The shards’ power isn’t yours to wield.”
The leader’s voice turned cold. “So be it.” He raised his hand, and the other Seekers drew their weapons.
The battle began in a blur.
Anara moved like a shadow, her daggers flashing as she darted between enemies, striking with precision. Verrin held his ground, his sword glowing faintly as he parried and struck with practiced ease.
Kaelin, unarmed and unsure, felt the shards’ pulse intensify. Their energy was calling to him, demanding to be used.
“Kaelin!” Verrin shouted. “Use the shards! They chose you for a reason!”
Kaelin hesitated, fear and doubt swirling within him. The last time he had used the shards’ power, it had nearly consumed him. But as the Seekers pressed closer, he knew he had no choice.
He reached into the pouch and drew the shards into his hands. Their energy surged through him, overwhelming and electric. His vision blurred as the world around him seemed to slow.
The leader of the Seekers turned to him, his tone almost amused. “Ah, there it is. The spark of power. But can you control it?”
Kaelin didn’t answer. He focused the shards’ energy, channeling it into a brilliant wave of light that exploded outward. The Seekers were thrown back, their formation shattered.
The leader staggered but remained standing, his mask cracked. He laughed, a hollow sound that sent chills down Kaelin’s spine. “Impressive. But this is far from over.”
He gestured to his remaining followers, and they vanished into the forest, their retreat swift and silent. The leader lingered for a moment, his gaze fixed on Kaelin.
“We will meet again,” he said, his voice carrying a promise of vengeance. Then he turned and disappeared into the shadows.
The camp was eerily quiet as the trio regrouped. Anara wiped blood from her daggers, her expression dark. “What was that about? Who were those creeps?”
“Seekers,” Verrin said, sheathing his sword. “They’re an ancient order, dedicated to claiming the world’s most dangerous relics for their own ends. And now they know who we are.”
Kaelin sat down heavily, the shards still warm in his hands. “They’ll come for us again, won’t they?”
Verrin nodded. “Without question. And they won’t stop until they have the shards—or until we stop them.”
Anara frowned. “So what’s the plan? Keep running? Keep fighting?”
Kaelin looked at the shards, their glow steady and calm. “No,” he said firmly. “We stop running. We find the other relics before they do. If the shards chose me, then maybe... maybe they can lead us to the others.”
Verrin studied him, a flicker of respect in his eyes. “It’s a dangerous path. But it may be the only way.”
Anara sighed. “Fine. But if we’re doing this, we’re doing it my way—smart, fast, and preferably without any more mysterious shadow cults.”
Kaelin smiled faintly. “Deal.”
As the first rays of dawn broke through the trees, the trio packed their belongings and prepared to leave. The path ahead was uncertain, but one thing was clear: the fight was far from over.
