Chapter 18: Echoes of the Heart
The silence in the chamber was deafening. The once-roaring shadows had dissipated, leaving behind only the faint hum of the obelisk. Kaelin leaned against Anara, his legs trembling as he tried to steady himself.
“Is it over?” Anara asked, her voice uncharacteristically quiet.
Verrin approached the obelisk, his hand hovering over its surface. The shards’ light pulsed faintly within, steady but subdued. “The Heart is sealed—for now. But it took everything the shards had to contain it. Their power is weakened.”
Kaelin straightened, forcing himself to stand on his own. “We did what we came here to do. Everglen’s curse is lifted, right?”
Verrin’s expression darkened. “The curse on the city, yes. But the Heart... it’s not destroyed. It’s imprisoned, and prisons can be broken.”
Kaelin clenched his fists. “Then we make sure no one ever gets the chance to free it.”
Anara smirked faintly, though her usual sarcasm was missing. “Sounds simple enough. Just guard an ancient ruin filled with traps and shadows for eternity. No big deal.”
Kaelin managed a weak laugh, but his heart felt heavy. The battle might have been won, but the war was far from over.
As they made their way out of the chamber, the city around them seemed to change. The oppressive energy had lifted, replaced by a strange stillness. The ruins no longer felt hostile but mournful, like a city grieving its lost glory.
“It feels different,” Anara said, glancing around.
Verrin nodded. “The shards were part of the city’s foundation. With their energy returned, Everglen has regained some of its balance. But it’s a fragile peace.”
They reached the edge of the city, where the twisted forest loomed. The path they had taken was now clear, the shadows retreating into the distance. Kaelin paused, looking back at the ruins.
“What happens now?” he asked.
Verrin sighed. “We leave Everglen behind and ensure no one else comes here. But there’s more at stake than just this city. The Heart’s influence reaches beyond these walls. There will be others who seek its power, and they’ll stop at nothing to claim it.”
Kaelin’s stomach tightened. “So, this was just the beginning.”
“Exactly,” Verrin said. “The shards chose you for a reason, Kaelin. Their power is tied to you now, and that makes you a target.”
Anara crossed her arms. “Great. So not only do we have to worry about shadow monsters and ancient curses, but now we’ve got power-hungry maniacs to deal with?”
Kaelin smiled faintly. “It wouldn’t be an adventure without a little danger.”
Anara rolled her eyes. “You’ve been spending too much time around Verrin.”
Verrin chuckled, but his gaze remained serious. “There’s one more thing you should know. The shards... they’re not the only relics like this. There are others out there, scattered across the world. And if the Heart is connected to them—”
“Then we’re not just dealing with one threat,” Kaelin finished. “We’re dealing with all of them.”
The weight of Verrin’s words settled over the group as they stepped out of Everglen’s shadow. For the first time in days, they felt the warmth of the sun on their faces. But the light didn’t erase the shadows in Kaelin’s heart.
“We’ll face whatever comes,” he said, his voice steady. “Together.”
Anara gave him a sideways glance. “Don’t get too heroic on me. I’m here for the treasure, not the speeches.”
Kaelin laughed, but the determination in his eyes didn’t waver. The shards’ power might have brought them together, but it was their bond that would carry them through whatever lay ahead.
