𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟓 : 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐬
The dark plain stretched endlessly around Kaelin and Anara, the ground beneath them cold and unsteady, as if it might vanish at any moment. Above, the sky churned with black and crimson swirls. The shadowy creatures, their forms constantly shifting, circled them like predators waiting to strike.
Kaelin held the shard tightly, its light glowing brighter, pushing back the encroaching darkness. “Stay close to me,” he said, his voice steady despite the chaos.
Anara wiped sweat from her brow, her daggers glinting faintly in the shard’s glow. “Close is good. Let’s hope this thing doesn’t expect us to fight forever.”
The creatures lunged again, their bodies twisting unnaturally. Kaelin raised his staff, a wave of light surging out and scattering them. But even as they fell, more shadows rose from the ground, filling the space like smoke.
“What do they want from us?” Anara shouted, slashing through a creature that dissolved into black mist.
Kaelin’s grip tightened on the shard. “It’s a test! The Watcher said we have to face the shadows within ourselves.”
“Well, that’s vague and unhelpful!” Anara dodged another attack, her movements quick and precise. “Any chance we can just skip to the part where we win?”
Kaelin didn’t answer. Instead, he closed his eyes and focused on the shard. The light inside it pulsed like a heartbeat, steady and strong. He could feel it calling to him, urging him to dig deeper.
“Anara,” he said, his voice quieter now, “I think we’re going about this wrong. We’re fighting, but I don’t think we’re supposed to.”
Anara glanced at him like he’d lost his mind. “Not fight? Do you see what’s happening around us?” She ducked another shadow, her dagger flashing as she struck.
Kaelin shook his head. “It’s not about defeating them. It’s about understanding them. The Watcher said these shadows are part of us.”
“Great,” Anara muttered. “I’m supposed to understand the thing trying to claw my face off.”
The creatures attacked again, but this time, Kaelin didn’t raise his staff. He stood his ground, letting the shard’s light shield him. As the first creature reached him, it hesitated, its formless body wavering in the glow.
Kaelin took a deep breath. “You’re not real,” he said, his voice calm. “You’re a reflection of my fear, my doubts. But I’m not afraid anymore.”
The creature hissed, its body shrinking, and then it vanished, dissolving into nothing.
“Kaelin!” Anara called, still fighting off her own attackers. “What are you doing?”
“You have to face them,” Kaelin said, turning to her. “Don’t fight them. Accept them.”
Anara looked at him, her jaw clenched. “Easier said than done!”
Another shadow rushed at her, its claws reaching for her. She raised her daggers but hesitated. The creature loomed over her, and for a moment, she froze.
Kaelin stepped toward her, his voice steady. “You can do this, Anara. They’re just echoes. They can’t hurt you unless you let them.”
Anara took a deep breath, her hands trembling. The creature lunged, and instead of striking, she dropped her daggers. The shadow stopped inches from her face, its claws quivering.
“I’m not afraid of you,” Anara said, her voice firm. “I’ve faced worse than my own doubts.”
The creature screeched, its form unraveling into mist. Around them, the remaining shadows began to retreat, their forms flickering like dying embers.
The ground beneath their feet steadied, and the churning sky began to calm. A soft light spread across the plain, warm and comforting.
The Watcher’s voice echoed around them. “You have passed the trial. The shard recognizes your resolve.”
Kaelin and Anara looked at each other, their expressions a mix of relief and exhaustion. “That’s it?” Anara asked, her voice tinged with disbelief.
The Watcher appeared before them, its shadowy form less menacing now. “For now,” it said. “The shard has chosen you as its bearer, Kaelin. But the darkness will not stop. It will come for you again, stronger and more relentless.”
Kaelin nodded, his grip on the shard firm. “Then we’ll be ready.”
The Watcher inclined its head. “Remember what you have learned here. Only by understanding the shadows within can you face those without.”
The world around them shimmered, and suddenly they were back in the forest. The ancient archway was dark once more, the symbols dim and lifeless.
Anara leaned against a tree, catching her breath. “Next time, can we skip the cryptic tests and go straight to the part where we survive?”
Kaelin managed a tired smile. “I’ll see what I can do.”
As they began to make their way out of the forest, Kaelin felt a newfound strength within him. The shard in his pocket was quiet now, its light faint but steady.
But in the back of his mind, he knew this was only the beginning. The darkness was still out there, waiting. And it would not rest until it claimed the shard—and them along with it.
