Chapter 5 (Reign’s POV)
The house felt eerily quiet. The argument between Ethan and Liliana had left an unsettling tension in the air. Ethan had stormed out, leaving Liliana behind in a flurry of anger and hurt. I felt guilty for what had happened, and the weight of our actions pressed heavily on me. I had been reckless, and now Liliana was caught in the middle of it all.
I couldn’t stay in the living room much longer; my thoughts were too loud. I walked through the house, unsure of what to do, my mind a swirl of guilt and fear.
That’s when it hit me: I needed to talk to Liliana. I had no idea how she would react, but we couldn’t keep avoiding it. But what if she found out from someone else? What if someone else told her? I had to tell her before it was too late.
I grabbed my phone, my fingers trembling. I needed to send something. Something that would break the silence. I stared at the screen for a moment, fighting the urge to chicken out. Then I typed:
“Liliana, we need to talk. I have something important to say. Please, just let me explain.”
I hit send, my chest tightening. I couldn’t undo what had already happened, but I could at least try to explain. I didn’t know how Liliana would react, but I had to hope she’d hear me out.
The minutes stretched on, agonizingly slow. I glanced at the phone again, waiting for her reply. But nothing came. Anxiety gnawed at me, and the knot in my stomach only grew tighter.
The next morning, when Liliana entered the kitchen, the tension between Ethan and me was palpable. I could see the uncertainty in his eyes as we both waited for her to say something, anything. But Liliana didn’t speak. She just stood there, her gaze distant, as though she were somewhere else, lost in her thoughts.
I could feel the weight of the words I had to say pressing down on me. Ethan and I had been so careless, so thoughtless, and now it was time to face the consequences. There was no avoiding it anymore.
I took a breath and began, my voice a little shaky but determined. “Liliana, we... we need to talk. Ethan and I... we’ve been seeing each other. For months now. I know we should’ve told you earlier, and I am so sorry. I know this hurts, but it’s the truth. We didn’t want to hide it from you, but now, we can’t keep lying.”
Ethan nodded, his voice tight with guilt. “We’re sorry, Liliana. This was never about hurting you, but we’ve messed up. We just couldn’t keep it from you anymore.”
I searched her face for any sign of reaction, any flicker of emotion. But there was nothing. Her expression was flat, unreadable. I felt my heart drop into my stomach. How could she be so... calm? So silent?
“Liliana?” I whispered, stepping closer, my throat tightening. “Please... say something. Anything.”
But she didn’t.
Her silence felt suffocating, and I couldn’t take it anymore. I reached for her, trying to understand. “Liliana, don’t just shut us out like this... we never meant to hurt you.”
She blinked slowly, her gaze distant, her voice barely a whisper. “It doesn’t matter,” she said, almost as if she were speaking to herself. “It doesn’t matter anymore.”
I froze, my chest tight with regret. Ethan looked at me, and I saw the same confusion mirrored in his eyes. What was going on in her head? Why wasn’t she reacting?
Her lack of emotion only made everything worse. It felt like we had failed her in every way possible. My heart ached for her, and yet I didn’t know how to fix it.
I couldn’t understand why she wasn’t showing any anger or sadness—why she was so distant. Had we broken her so completely that she couldn’t even process what we had done to her?
