Madeline froze in place as Emma’s weak voice broke the silence.
“Maddie… are you alright?” Emma’s trembling hand reached for her sister, her voice strained and filled with pain. Her eyes fluttered open, and she stared at Madeline, panic evident in her expression.
Madeline’s heart shattered as tears flooded her eyes. She grabbed Emma’s hand, holding it tightly, her own body trembling.
“Emma… you’re awake… you’re alive,” Madeline whispered, her voice cracking. Her tears flowed freely as she leaned closer. “I’m sorry, Emma. I’m so sorry for everything. Please forgive me…”
Emma shook her head slightly, her voice barely a whisper. “Maddie… don’t cry. You’re here, and that’s all I need. But... are you alright?”
Madeline couldn’t hold back her emotions any longer and collapsed onto Emma’s chest, sobbing uncontrollably. Her tears soaked the hospital gown as she clung to her sister.
Alan, who had been silently watching, struggled to sit up. His voice, hoarse and filled with emotion, broke the moment. “Maddie… stop crying, please.” His own tears glistened as he reached out, placing a hand on Madeline’s shoulder. “We’re okay. We’ll get through this together.”
Emma, noticing how distraught Madeline was, tried to lighten the mood despite her frail state. With a faint smile, she teased, “Maddie… you did pass your exams, didn’t you? Or were you crying over those too?”
Madeline blinked at her sister, momentarily stunned by the unexpected humor, before letting out a choked laugh through her tears. “Emma! How can you even joke right now?”
Emma gave a weak grin, her voice still soft. “Because… if you didn’t pass, then all this drama was for nothing. I mean, what’s the point of me almost dying if you flunked?”
Alan chuckled faintly, shaking his head. “Only Emma would think of something like that right now.”
The tension in the room broke slightly, replaced by a bittersweet warmth. Madeline wiped her tears and smiled, realizing how much she had missed her sister’s sharp wit.
“For your information, I passed with flying colors, Emma. So don’t worry about that,” Madeline replied, her voice steadying.
Emma smirked. “Good. I didn’t go through all this for a failure.”
Emma’s soft smile suddenly disappeared. Her body tensed, her eyes fluttering shut, and before Madeline could react, Emma collapsed back onto the bed.
“Emma? Emma!” Madeline’s voice broke into a desperate scream, shaking her sister gently. “No! Don’t do this to me!”
The heart monitor beside Emma’s bed began to emit sharp, irregular beeps. The sound was piercing, each beep echoing like a death knell. The nurse rushed in, followed by the doctor, his face tight with urgency.
“Miss, step outside! We need space!” The doctor’s firm voice barely registered in Madeline’s ears as she stood frozen in place.
“No, please—she needs me! Emma, wake up!” Madeline cried, clutching her sister’s limp hand.
A nurse gently pulled her away, guiding her out of the room as chaos erupted inside. Machines beeped rapidly, the frantic voices of the medical staff filling the air.
Before Madeline could process anything, Alan, sitting in the corner, let out a soft groan and slumped over. His face turned pale, and his body went limp.
“Alan? No, no, no!” Madeline screamed as two nurses rushed to him, quickly transferring him to another bed.
The entire hospital seemed to blur around her. The piercing beeps from both monitors grew louder, faster, and then suddenly... silence.
The doctor emerged moments later, his eyes red-rimmed, his shoulders slumped as though carrying the weight of the world. He didn’t speak at first, his expression speaking volumes.
Madeline stumbled forward, trembling. “Doctor, tell me… tell me they’re okay. Please!” Her voice was hoarse, barely above a whisper.
The doctor knelt before her, gripping her hands tightly. Tears streamed down his face as he choked out the words. “I’m… I’m so sorry. I couldn’t save them. Emma and Alan… they’re gone.”
Madeline’s world shattered in that instant. Her knees buckled, and she collapsed to the floor. Her heart felt as if it had been ripped from her chest. “No… no, no, no! This isn’t real! They can’t be gone!”
Her cries echoed through the hallway as darkness consumed her. The weight of grief was too much, and before she knew it, her vision blurred, and she fainted, falling into an abyss of despair.
The hospital fell silent, the only sound remaining was the muffled sobs of those who had witnessed the heartbreaking scene.
