Chapter 2 (The King's Illness)

But this life of ours,

a riddle hard to understand,

sleep soundly,

you will wake up with sorrow.

This is what befell

the beloved King,

when he dreamt

one night he slept.

It is said that Don Juan,

his beloved youngest son,

was betrayed and murdered

by two villains.

When he was already dead, he was thrown

into a well that could not be measured;

the King upon waking from his sleep

woke up with grief.

Because of the great sorrow

he could no longer rest,

it was imprinted on his mind

the whole dream he had.

From then on he was sorrowful,

even if he ate, what for!

tears and sighs

were his comfort in his solitude!

Because of this, he grew weak,

became like skin and bones,

he was bedridden, and it was evident

that his last hour was near.

They called for a doctor,

one who was wise in the kingdom,

who could not determine

what Don Fernando's illness was.

That's why the children,

and even the Queen, were distraught,

their sorrow immeasurable,

day and night they were worried.

In God's grace,

they found a healer,

he was the one who understood

the illness of the famous King.

"Your illness, dear King,

is a result of a dream,

though heavy and serious,

there is an effective cure..."

There is a beautiful bird,

its name is Adarna,

when you hear it sing,

your illness will be cured.

"This bird lives

in the Tabor mountains,

on a tree whose leaves are like

shining silver stones."

"During the day it's not there

in the distant hills,

with other birds

it relieves hunger."

"At night, in the quiet,

peaceful in the mountains,

when it returns and rests

in the tree that is its home."

(Summary):

Don Fernando was afflicted with a serious illness caused by a bad dream. In his dream, the king saw Don Juan murdered by two assassins and thrown into a deep well. From then on, the king could not sleep and could barely eat, until he became nothing but skin and bones. The queen and three princes were extremely worried because no one could cure the king. A wise doctor arrived and said that the king's illness stemmed from the dream, and the only cure was the song of a bird found on Mount Tabor and perched the bird adarna on the glittering tree of Piedras Platas. It is said that the bird is only found at night because during the day it is in the hills to eat with other birds
