Chapter 11

She took a step back, her instincts screaming not to trust him. “A trap? What are you talking about?"

“The castle,” Liam said, his tone urgent. “It isn’t what it seems. The people you think are your allies—” He broke off, his eyes scanning the corridor. “They’re not. They’ve been manipulating you from the start.”

Valerie’s mind raced. She thought of the cryptic whispers she’d overheard, the peculiar way the castle’s staff seemed to vanish when she approached. Could Liam be telling the truth?

“Why should I believe you?” she challenged. “After everything you’ve done—your lies, your family—why should I trust you now?”

Liam stepped closer, his voice low but fierce. “Because I chose you, Valerie. Against my family, against everything I was taught to believe, I chose you. I left everything behind to protect you.”

His words struck her like a blow, but she couldn’t let her guard down. “If you’re here to protect me, then tell me everything. No more secrets, no more half-truths.”

He hesitated for a moment before nodding. “Fine. But not here. They’re watching us.”

Before Valerie could protest, Liam grabbed her hand and pulled her into the shadows. Together, they slipped through the labyrinthine corridors of the castle until they reached a hidden alcove.

“Now,” Liam said, turning to her. “Here’s what you need to know. The castle isn’t just a sanctuary. It’s a stronghold for the very people who want to see you fall.”

Valerie’s breath hitched. “Who? Who are they?”

Liam’s jaw tightened. “The ones who killed your family. The ones who framed you for crimes you didn’t commit. The ones my family has been in league with for years.”

The room seemed to spin as Valerie processed his words. Everything she thought she knew was crumbling. “And why should I believe you’re any different? That you’re not still working with them?”

Liam reached into his cloak and pulled out a blood-stained letter. “Because I have proof. Proof that they’re planning to destroy everything you’ve built here—and that you’re the only one who can stop them.”

Valerie’s fingers trembled as she took the letter. Her eyes darted over the words, and her blood ran cold.

This was more than just a fight for survival. It was a war, and she was at the center of it.

And now, for better or worse, she had Liam by her side.

To be continued...

What was in that letter that trembled Valerie??

What trap was Liam talking about??

What was the betrayal??
