She turned sharply, her heart pounding. “Who’s there?” she called, her voice steady despite the growing tension.

From the darkness emerged a figure she never thought she’d see again. Liam. His sharp features were partly obscured by the hood of his cloak, but there was no mistaking those piercing eyes.

“Liam?” Valerie’s voice trembled, a mix of relief and anger. “What are you doing here? How long have you been following me?”

Liam pulled back his hood, revealing a face that was more haggard than she remembered. Dark circles underscored his eyes, and a fresh scar slashed across his jawline. “Long enough,” he admitted, his voice gravelly yet gentle. “You’ve been walking into a trap, Valerie.”

She took a step back, her instincts screaming not to trust him. “A trap? What are you talking about?"
