Valerie sat on the velvet-covered bed, her mind swirling with unanswered questions and a gnawing unease. The ornate chamber, despite its grandeur, felt like a gilded cage, and Liam’s parting words echoed in her mind: “Revenge is a path I won’t walk alone.”
Why me? Valerie thought, running her fingers over the cool, intricate carvings of the bedpost. Her transmigration into this world had placed her at the heart of a centuries-old feud, but she had yet to understand why she mattered so much—or what power she truly wielded.
Determined not to sit idle, Valerie stood and walked to the large vanity mirror. The reflection staring back at her was almost unrecognizable: the once-tired eyes of Jennie Rose had been replaced by the fierce gaze of Valerie Valentine. Her hair fell in luxurious waves, her posture radiated confidence, and an aura of latent magic surrounded her. But underneath, she was still herself—terrified yet defiant.
If this world expects a villainess, then that’s what I’ll be. She refused to be anyone’s pawn.
A soft knock on the door pulled her from her thoughts. Before she could respond, the door creaked open, and a young woman with golden hair peeked in. She wore a simple maid’s uniform, but her eyes sparkled with a keen intelligence.
“My lady,” the maid said, stepping inside and curtsying. “I’m Elise, assigned to serve you during your stay.”
Valerie narrowed her eyes. In a world of shifting loyalties and hidden motives, she couldn’t afford to trust anyone. “Serve me, or watch me?” she asked, her voice cool.
Elise flinched but recovered quickly. “A bit of both, if I’m honest. Lord Liam has his ways, but I’m here to help you, truly. You must be confused about everything.”
Valerie studied Elise, sensing no malice, only caution. Perhaps an ally could be useful. “Then help me understand,” Valerie said. “Why does this marriage matter so much?”
Elise hesitated, then stepped closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. “It’s more than just a union, my lady. The Valentine and Blackwood families have waged war for generations. Blood has been spilled, and grudges have festered. But the magic that binds this world is old and vengeful, tied to the oaths and promises made long ago.”
Valerie frowned. “Magic... and revenge.” She clenched her fists, frustration building. “How am I supposed to make a difference in all of this?”
Elise’s expression softened with pity. “You’re not just anyone, my lady. You carry magic in your blood—magic that was awakened the moment you entered this world. If the marriage is broken, chaos will follow.”
Valerie’s heart thudded. So that was it. She was a walking, talking key to the balance of this world. But why did she feel so out of control?
Before she could press Elise further, a commotion erupted outside the chamber. The heavy stomp of boots echoed in the hallway, and Elise’s face paled.
“What’s happening?” Valerie asked, but before Elise could answer, the door burst open.
Two guards stormed in, flanking a figure Valerie hadn’t expected to see so soon—Liam. His dark eyes smoldered with barely restrained fury, and his jaw was set in a grim line.
“Out,” he ordered Elise, who quickly bowed and left, her gaze flicking back to Valerie with concern.
As the door shut behind them, Valerie’s heart sped up. Liam crossed the room in three swift strides, his presence suffocating yet electrifying. He stopped just a breath away, and Valerie fought the instinct to step back.
“You’ve been asking questions,” he said, his voice low and dangerous. “Digging into matters you’re not ready to understand.”
Valerie refused to be intimidated. She lifted her chin, meeting his gaze. “What else am I supposed to do? You’ve trapped me here with no answers and expect me to play along.”
Liam’s eyes darkened, and for a moment, she thought she saw a crack in his mask. “You think this is easy for me?” he whispered, the words slipping out before he could stop them.
Valerie faltered. There was something raw in his voice, a pain he couldn’t hide. But the moment passed, and his expression hardened once more.
“Your safety is paramount,” he said, his control slipping back into place. “Until the wedding, you will remain here. Guarded. Protected.” His voice turned cold. “And if you try to escape, the consequences will be dire.”
Valerie bristled. “You don’t own me, Liam.”
A humorless smile tugged at his lips. “No. But our fates are bound, like it or not.”
Before she could muster a retort, Liam stepped back, his gaze lingering on her for just a second longer than necessary. Then, with a sweep of his coat, he strode out, leaving her alone with her racing heart.
Valerie sank onto the bed, her mind a whirlwind. Liam was hiding something, a truth buried beneath layers of bitterness and duty. And if she wanted to survive—and perhaps even bend this world to her will—she would have to unravel the mystery of the villain who had ensnared her.
Her path was set, but whether it would lead to triumph or ruin, only time would tell.
