Suddenly, the door slammed shut, causing Rachel to nearly topple from her chair, the sudden movement startling her. She turned to see her brother, Roh, chuckling at her reaction.
"Roh, how many times must I remind you to close the door gently?"
With a teasing grin, Roh replied, "Oh, dear sister, I forget that you're a bit of a scaredy-cat, afraid of everything." Though Roh held a deep affection for Rachel, their playful banter often escalated into spirited squabbles.
"Enough, Roh! Your teasing hurts me," Rachel exclaimed, her voice tinged with sadness.
"What’s happening in here, kids?" Mr. Hudson entered the room, his presence commanding attention.
"Dad, Roh is making fun of me!" Rachel declared.
Roh rolled his eyes, casting a glance at Rachel, while Mr. Hudson shot him a disapproving look. "Roh, remember to treat your sister with respect; she’s older than you."
Roh nodded, muttering a soft, "Yes, Dad," as he exited the room.
"My little angel, come here. Do you like this new home?" Mr. Hudson asked, his voice warm and inviting.
"Yes, Dad, I believe it will be a wonderful place for me. Yet, I feel a bit lonely here," Rachel admitted, a flicker of fear hidden deep within her heart as she gazed out toward the balcony and the endless street beyond.
Mr. Hudson offered her an encouraging smile before leaving, reminding Rachel to join the family for dinner.
Taking out her diary—a cherished gift from her grandmother, still wrapped in its paper, waiting for her to unveil its secrets on her 18th birthday—Rachel felt a wave of nostalgia wash over her. She then glanced at her necklace, a blue hemispheric stone encircled by an elliptical ring. To her astonishment, it began to glow, shifting from blue to red, igniting a spark of strength within her. Her eyes transformed from green to blue, radiating a soft light that enveloped her.
In an instant, everything returned to normal, leaving her in awe of the moment.
She donned her pajamas and made her way downstairs, where her family awaited her. After sharing a meal filled with laughter and conversation, Rachel bid them goodnight and returned to her room.
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a shadow flitting by. Heart racing, she rushed to the light switch, only to find nothing there.
“Am I conjuring fears in this unfamiliar place? Ever since I arrived, I’ve felt a presence watching over me,” she pondered silently.
Stepping onto the balcony, Rachel gazed up at the radiant moon, which seemed to smile down at her, surrounded by a tapestry of twinkling stars. She marveled at two birds entwined together, whispering, “How beautiful it is.” Her thoughts turned to dreams of love as she imagined her prince charming, a blush warming her cheeks.
Meanwhile, at the edge of the street, someone remained hidden, their dark eyes glowing with intensity, never wavering from her gaze.
Once again, an unsettling sensation crept over Rachel, as if she were being watched. She scanned the street but found no one. Retreating indoors, she lay on her bed, the gentle breeze lulling her into a peaceful slumber, where dreams awaited her.
Yet, those dark eyes continued to follow her, lingering from the balcony, watching over her as she drifted into the depths of her dreams, inching closer and closer...
