The Unseen door

The days blurred into a hazy montage of repetition. The same sunrise, the same coffee stain on the kitchen counter, the same awkward encounter with the barista at the corner cafe. My life had become an endless loop, a broken record stuck on the same groove. It wasn't a film noir flashback, though, a noir flashback would have a sense of style, a cinematic flair, but this was more like a cheap, repetitive horror film, the kind that makes you want to rip your hair out.

And yet, there were subtle discrepancies, whispers of something amiss. The barista’s nametag, once a faded blue, now seemed a vibrant green. The familiar stray cat, usually napping in the alleyway, was gone. These minute changes were hardly noticeable, almost like optical illusions, but they chipped away at the certainty of my reality, leaving me with a gnawing sense of unease.

The worst part was the dream. Every night, the same dream. A dense forest, thick with emerald foliage, a faint glimmering in the distance, a doorway that seemed to pulse with an ethereal light. It called to me, beckoning me forward, promising secrets, a way out.

The first time I woke up from that dream, I felt an overwhelming urge to find that door. The forest seemed too real, the light too potent. I was sure it was more than just a dream. I started scrutinizing my city, my world, looking for any clue, any sign, anything that might lead me to the source of that light.

But there was nothing. My city, my reality, was a solid, unwavering block. The doorway existed only in the dreams, a phantom portal in the ethereal realm of sleep. I was trapped, a prisoner of my own reality, my own mind, the day a relentless tormentor.

I couldn’t ignore the pull of the dream. I wanted to break free, to escape this unending cycle. The dream had given me hope, a glimmer of something beyond the repetition, a chance to break the chains of time.

The second time I woke from the dream, I decided to take a gamble. It was the same day, the same routine, but this time, I felt a surge of determination, a flicker of defiance. I sat down, closed my eyes, and focused on the dream. I could still see the forest, the light, the doorway.

I opened my eyes. My apartment was still the same, the usual clutter, the faded beige walls, but something felt different. I turned around and looked at the wall opposite my window.

The wallpaper was different. The pattern, once a dull floral, was now a vibrant, swirling kaleidoscope of color. In the center of the wall, there was a door, a shimmering doorway that seemed to pulse with an inner light. It looked exactly like the door in my dream.

My heart hammered in my chest. Could it be? Could this be the doorway from the dream? Could this be the escape I’d been searching for?

My hands trembled as I reached out, my fingers brushing against the cool surface of the door. The light intensified, pulsating, beckoning me forward. I took a deep breath, stepped forward, and pushed the door open.

The world dissolved into a kaleidoscope of colors. I felt a rush of dizziness, a feeling of falling, as if I were plummeting into a vortex of light and energy. Then, slowly, the world solidified around me. I found myself standing in a forest. The trees were taller than anything I’d ever seen, their leaves shimmering with a thousand hues, their branches reaching for the sky like giant arms. The air was sweet, filled with the scent of exotic flowers, the sounds of birdsong, a melody I’d never heard before.

I was no longer in my city. I was in a realm that defied description, a realm that seemed to exist beyond the boundaries of reality, a realm that seemed to be woven from the fabric of dreams.

I started walking, the forest floor soft beneath my feet, the path illuminated by the ethereal glow of the hidden sun. The air was warm and humid, the sunlight filtering through the leaves, casting dancing shadows on the ground. I could hear the sound of water, a gentle cascade, and followed the sound, my curiosity piqued.

The forest opened up, revealing a hidden valley, a lush oasis in the heart of the emerald wilderness. At the center of the valley, a crystal clear stream gurgled and splashed, cascading over smooth rocks, forming a series of small waterfalls. I stood there, mesmerized by the beauty of it all. This was not my world. This was something else, something magical, something truly wondrous.

Then, I saw it.

A being, unlike any I had ever seen, stood at the edge of the stream, its form a tapestry of light and shadow, its presence both majestic and serene. It was tall and slender, with long, flowing hair the color of moonlight and eyes that shimmered like the stars. Its skin, a tapestry of shimmering scales, seemed to absorb the light around it, making it seem both ethereal and real.

I felt a sense of awe wash over me. This was not just a creature, it was something beyond, something ancient, something powerful.

The creature turned its head, its eyes meeting mine. It spoke, its voice a melody of windchimes, a whisper of ancient wisdom.

“Welcome,” it said, “To the Realm of Whispers.”

The creature introduced itself as Aella, the guardian of this realm, the keeper of its secrets. It explained that this was a dimension hidden from humanity, a realm untouched by the human world, a place where time flowed differently, where magic thrived, where dreams were real.

“You have found your way here,” Aella said, its voice echoing through the valley, “because you have been chosen.”

The creature's words took me by surprise. I was chosen? For what?

Aella continued, its eyes twinkling with a knowing light. “You are a traveller of time,” it said, its voice echoing through the valley, “You have stumbled upon the door that connects our realms. You have been brought here to face a challenge, a test of your courage, your spirit, your worthiness to unlock the secrets of this realm and the mysteries of time itself.”

I was confused. What challenge? What mysteries? Was this all a dream?

“This is not a dream,” Aella assured me, its gaze unwavering, its voice filled with a strange power. “This is a reality, a dimension hidden from your world, a realm that exists beyond the boundaries of your understanding. You are here to learn, to grow, to face your fears and unlock the secrets of time. You have been chosen, not to break the loop, but to understand it.”

I was filled with questions, but before I could speak, Aella turned and pointed to a distant path. “Your first challenge awaits,” it said, its voice a soft murmur, “Follow the path and you will find it.”

As Aella turned to leave, it looked at me one last time, its eyes filled with a deep, knowing gaze.

“And remember,” it said, “There is no escape from time. There is only understanding.”

And with that, the creature disappeared into the forest, leaving me alone, standing in the heart of a wondrous, impossible realm, my mind reeling with questions, my future uncertain.

I took a deep breath and started walking, the path ahead winding through the dense foliage, the secrets of the realm beckoning me forward, my journey just beginning.
