"Hmm. So, what's the matter?" she asked while she sat across him, cross-legged, hugging a velvet cushion. The long royal looking backrest of the sofa, her attire, and mannerisms made her seem no less than a queen.

"I was returning from a party at my friend's place and saw you standing near the banyan tree opposite my house. You looked lonely, even scared. I wanted to make sure you're okay, because it's nearly three in the morning," she said as she leaned forward and poured out some juice into a glass. She offered him the glass.

"Thank you, ma'am. I am Ruchi's friend. Your neighbor's daughter. I come here frequently. Tonight I came to meet her, that's it," he said, clarifying his position.

"You sound so meek! My bua loves to tease boys like you. Her son was a shy boy too, but now is in the army. She misses him a lot. She would love to say hello, but she sleeps early, so you'll have to meet her another day."

Anuj nodded, unsure of what else he could say. Aarya stared at him, a smile on her face. "You look like you were at a party," she commented.

"Yes, ma'am."

"How was it? Had fun?" she enquired.

"Ah...it was okay, ma'am. Nothing great. It was just a house party with my friends," he answered listlessly.

"I know. Ruchi also returned home early today from a party. Let me guess, you were both at the same party, right? What happened at the party that she returned home in tears? I believe you asked for something special. Maybe a kiss? And it didn't go well?" she calmly asked him, looking straight into his eyes.

Anuj's heart sank and his legs began to tremble. Was it in the news or is this lady a mind reader? This is the era where sex is pretty common, and I had just asked for a kiss. Kiss ka kissa kardiya!

"How... how did you know, ma'am?" he asked, unable to hide his shock.

"I am Ruchi's bua and I know who you are, Anuj. You are my niece's boyfriend," she replied with a smile.

He was startled. "Ma'am, she never said... ooh... sorry I didn't know!"

Anuj was relieved that at least there wouldn't be a police complaint lodged for his late-night misadventure. But that was the only good news. He tried to appear casual, desperately hiding his anxiety.

I hope Ruchi didn't complain about me. I will be screwed, Did Ruchi discuss such a private matter, that too in the middle of the night, with her aunt?

He wiped his sweaty forehead.

"I didn't know Ruchi is so close to you. She never mentioned a bua whom she discusses everything with!" How could I have been so clueless about this relationship?

"I can believe that, Anuj, because it looks like you do not know many things. How to respect consent seems to be on that list as well?" She did not want him to steer away from the question.
