Roy stood frozen in the darkened bedroom, his heart a thunderous beat against his chest. His entire body tensed as he heard Hana's soft footsteps approaching. The light from the hallway stretched long across the floor, casting shadows that danced along the walls. She was only a few feet away now, completely unaware of the storm brewing just beyond her doorway.
He hadn’t planned for it to come to this not exactly. In his mind, he had always imagined that things would unfold differently. Maybe Hana would one day notice him for who he really was, or maybe he’d finally say the right thing that would make her see. But now, standing there in the middle of her bedroom, Roy realized that he had gone too far. There was no turning back.
Hana appeared in the doorway, her eyes still sleepy as she reached up to turn on the light. She was dressed in simple pajamas, her hair slightly damp from the shower. The moment the light flickered on, she froze, her gaze locking onto Roy who stood rigid in front of her.
Her eyes widened in horror.
Roy…? she whispered, disbelief clear in her voice. Her body went rigid, the reality of what was happening dawning on her in an instant. "What are you doing here?"
Roy’s mouth went dry, his mind racing for an explanation anything that might make sense of this. But all he could see was the fear in her eyes, the way her hand trembled as she reached for her phone on the dresser, her instinct to protect herself from him.
He stepped forward before he could think, his movements sharp and deliberate. Hana, wait. I
Stop! she screamed, backing away from him, her breath quickening as panic overtook her. How did you get in here? What are you doing?
Roy's hands shook. He wanted to say something, to tell her that he wasn’t here to hurt her, but the words wouldn’t come. The look on her face her fear of him it was like a knife twisting in his gut. She didn’t understand. She didn’t know how much he cared, how much he had done for her. Everything he did was for her.
“Hana, listen to me!” he shouted, his voice coming out more forcefully than he had intended. You don’t understand. I I've been watching you because I need to protect you. I care about you. More than you know!
Watching me? Her voice wavered, and she took another step back. Her hand was trembling too much to grasp the phone. Roy, you need to leave. Right now.
Her voice was firm, but Roy could see the tears beginning to well in her eyes. The sight made his heart ache. He hated seeing her like this afraid of him, when all he had wanted was to be the person she relied on, the one she turned to for everything.
Leave? Roy repeated, the word feeling foreign on his tongue. He had come so far, given up everything for this chance at being with her. And now she wanted him to walk away? He couldn’t. He wouldn’t. His entire second life had been leading up to this moment, and he wasn’t about to let it slip through his fingers.
Hana, don’t you see? he said, his voice dropping to a pleading whisper. I’ve been given a second chance… a chance to be with you. You’re the reason I’m here. I know it sounds crazy, but in my past life, I never had this. I never had love. But now now I have you.
Hana’s face twisted in confusion and fear. She took another step back, her hand finally closing around her phone. Roy, you’re scaring me. Please… just leave. I don’t understand what you’re saying.
Roy could feel the situation spiraling out of control, slipping away from him with every word he spoke. He didn’t want this. He hadn’t wanted to frighten her, but she wasn’t listening. She wasn’t seeing the truth. Why couldn’t she understand? Why couldn’t she see how much he loved her?
In a desperate attempt to make her understand, he stepped forward again, reaching out to her. Hana, please. Just listen to me! I can’t lose you. I’ve been given this chance, and I won’t waste it. We’re meant to be together. I know it!
Hana’s breath hitched in her throat, and in a sudden, terrified motion, she raised her phone and began dialing. I’m calling the police.
The words hit Roy like a slap to the face. He recoiled, his mind reeling with the realization that he had truly lost her that everything he had done, every step he had taken, had only driven her further away. The image of Hana smiling at Akira, of her living a life that didn’t include him, flashed in his mind, and a wave of desperation surged through him.
No! he shouted, lunging forward before she could press the button. He grabbed her wrist, pulling the phone from her hand. Hana let out a scream, trying to yank herself free from his grip, but Roy held on tight, his emotions boiling over into uncontrollable rage and panic.
Why are you doing this?” he cried, his voice cracking with the weight of everything he had been holding inside. I’ve done everything for you! I’ve given up everything for you! Why can’t you just see that we’re supposed to be together?
Tears streamed down Hana’s face as she struggled against him, her sobs only fueling Roy’s growing hysteria. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. She wasn’t supposed to be afraid of him. She was supposed to understand, to finally see him for who he was. But all she saw now was a monster.
Please, Roy, she whimpered, her voice barely audible. Let me go.
The sound of her voice, broken and scared, finally pierced through Roy’s haze of obsession. He stared at her for a long, agonizing moment, his grip loosening as the reality of what he had done began to sink in.
He had become the very thing he had promised himself he wouldn’t be. A man driven mad by his desires. A man who had lost all control.
Hana yanked her arm free, stumbling backward toward the door. She didn’t look back as she grabbed her phone and bolted out of the apartment, her footsteps echoing in the hallway.
Roy stood there in the silence of her room, his heart pounding in his chest, his mind numb. He had failed. He had lost her. And now, he was truly alone.
For the first time since his rebirth, Roy realized that maybe this second chance had been nothing more than a curse. A curse that had taken everything from him, including the one thing he thought he could hold onto his love for Hana.
As the sound of sirens began to wail in the distance, Roy closed his eyes, sinking to the floor. He had nothing left. Nothing but the shattered remains of his obsession.
