It was now nighttime, and they both reached their houses.
Robert had an apartment that he got when he was first got transferred to the station. It was comfortable and neat. It was a safe space for him where he was himself - not hiding anything from anyone.
He changed his clothes and looked at himself in the mirror.
"Phew... Ok, let's do this... For Sam... For dad"
He got his keys and locked his door. He went to the parking lot, the lights were flickering, and it was almost empty.
Robert went to the spot he used, and there was his car. Next to it was a motorcycle.
He went near and touched it.
"Maybe next time..."
He got inside his car and started heading towards the crime scene.
On the other hand, when Heather got to her house, she went in and glanced at her parents' picture.
She had a smile on her face, she caressed the picture and then sighed.
"Hi mom, hi dad, I hope you are doing great today too."
She immediately then went inside her room to get change, so Robert wouldn't wait long for her.
She got her motorcycle keys, blow a kiss goodbye at her parents, and left. She took the elevator and headed down to the parking lot. And there it was, after so long, her one and only love.
She ran her hand over the smooth, black frame. The matte finish absorbed the light, giving it a sleek, almost dangerous look. The sharp lines and aggressive curves spoke of raw power, like a predator ready to strike. It wasn’t just a bike—it was her escape. The engine hummed softly under her touch, waiting for the road. It felt perfect.
She got on it and rushed to the crime scene. As she was approaching, she saw Robert waiting for her leaning on his car.
"I'm so sorry I'm late." Heather nervously said as she was parking her motocycle.
"It's okay. Calm down. I only came a few minutes ago." He said to reassure and smiled as he went towards her.
"So... Let's go take a look, shall we?"
They slowly moved where the police found the body. The place still smelled like blood and sent chills down Robert's spine. He wasn't afraid of what would happen to him but rather what would happen to the suspects who dared to kill one of the few people that he loved.
They took out their flashlights and lit the road. Heather walked and then suddenly stopped.
"O-oh my God, Robert, take a look."
Robert was surprised and rushed towards her, and then he also stopped next to her.
"Heather, sorry, I don't think it's alive -"
He was interrupted by a wimper, and they both turned towards the injured cat. It was covered in blood, and it had lost too much already. Heather didn't hesitate to take it in her arms. It was barely breathing, but it was still alive.
Robert let out a sigh of relief and then lowered down to Heather's level so he could see the cat.
"We should treat its wounds."
"Robert, it's almost midnight. No vet is open right now. Everything has already closed."
Robert turned to her and looked at her.
"Who said anything about a vet, I will do it."
He smiled and gently touched her shoulder so they would hurry.
