"Jackson, im sorry. I'm still trying to cope with it. His death wasn't pointless. He was trying to protect the vice leader - my brother. Jack, come on, it's not easy for me either. "
There was a moment of silence. Heather was still outside the door, and "Robert's" real name was revealed.
"Ok, I'm sorry, it was just very sudden seeing him in a case file. Gotta go, Heather is still waiting for me."
Robert finally calmed down.
" Oh, what's that sweet girl doing now. I remember before you had a crus-"
Just like that, he hung up. He knew fully well what he would say, and it sure was embarrassing in his workplace.
Heather stepped back, calling out Robert's name echoing, making it look as if she was just coming from her desk.
" Robert.... Are you ok? Did something happen? Officers will start coming soon."
Heather was bothered by the name she heard since it brought back quite a few memories that were buried deep down.
Robert took a few quick breaths, calming completely himself down and unlocked the door.
"Im sorry Heather, was i missing for too long?"
Neither of them could look each other in the eyes. Was the guilt the one felt for lying or the confusion for all the new information.
" N-no don't worry, no one has come so far, but let's go back to open the front doors."
Heather suggested while her mind was filled with questions.
" Did Robert have a second name that i wasn't aware of? I have never heard anything about his family. Why did he react like that when he saw the victim?"
"Sure, let's go."
Just like her, in his mind, he had many questions.
"Did she hear me? If yes, why didn't she say anything? Will she confront me later? Perhaps she didn't hear a thing. How long was she standing outside?"
As they both walked down the hallway, voices could be heard. Seemed like they were a little late to open the front doors.
Officers started coming in one by one, starting with the chief of the current station.
"Good morning, Sir!"
Heather and Robber said at the same time.
"Oh Captain and Robert, you were here? Always first to come , good job."
As the chief left, they both sighed. Since they were suspicious of him, they didn't trust him one bit.
Neither him nor their actual chief from the original station.
Everyone proceed with the usual routine. They cleaned everything and organised any cases that weren't important at the moment.
It was obvious that petty crimes weren't their priority. They were trying to find the murder-or even more than one of the victims.
Some officers stayed sit at their desks, and others went to the cars for the patrol.
Today's schedule for Heather was to visit another police station because they claimed they had information about the murders that could help.
Robert was placed at the desk.
There was a lingering feeling of nervousness that Robert had. There weren't many times that they would separate since they were pretty close in ranks.
He approached Heather before going in the car.
"Hey Heather, be careful today. You haven't slept much. If you are tired, I can go. "
He didn't want her to leave, it bothered him, letting her go since he wouldn't be there to protect her if anything happened.
" Oh, come on, Robert, it would only be a few hours. It's fine. I will be careful. Alright... i guess i have to go now. See you in a bit. "
She waved her hand and then left.
Robert just couldn't shake off the feeling.
" What the hell, man, she will be fine... She will. I really hope so. "
His thoughts were quickly interrupted by Rick. Who is actually the top suspect for Robert and Heather since he hid the message they had found.
"Hey man, they said they need you. I think it's about the recent case. You probably forgot to submit your report."
"Damn it, how did it slip my mind. I'll be right there. it's ready to be submitted. "
They both went inside, with Robert faking a smile.
It would be weird for two colleagues to stop talking just like that, so he had to act like he would in a normal situation.
