Chapter 5: Echoes of a Past Life

The night sky was vast and unforgiving, stars shimmering like distant souls, out of reach yet ever-watchful. Yan Ling stood by the riverbank, his reflection distorted in the dark, rushing waters. The peaceful landscape did little to soothe the storm raging inside him. Memories, sharp and bitter, flooded his mind, dragging him back to a time long past—his first life.

He had been the Alchemy Emperor then, a title bestowed upon him by the masses, a testament to his unparalleled genius. Wealth, fame, and power had come easily. But none of it had mattered, not in comparison to the love he held for his family, particularly for his younger brother.

In that world, he loved and trusted his younger brother completely. The bond they had shared had felt unbreakable, a certainty that only those closest to family can know. But now, as he stood on the edge of this second life, that trust felt like a distant, foolish memory—a phantom pain that continued to haunt him.

Yan Ling's thoughts spiraled back, deeper into the recesses of his mind, to that moment of betrayal.

The chamber of the Alchemy Sect had been filled with light, flames dancing in the great furnace as Yan Ling prepared the final stages of a legendary elixir. He had been so focused, his thoughts clear, his trust unwavering. His brother had been there too, as always, eager to learn, eager to help.

But in the midst of creation, as Yan Ling’s power surged, something shifted. He had turned just in time to see his brother standing behind him, eyes cold, hands trembling as he plunged the blade into the furnace. The explosion that followed wasn’t just one of fire and metal, but of trust shattered into a thousand pieces.

It wasn’t the betrayal of an enemy; it was the betrayal of someone he had loved, trusted, and protected above all else. His brother’s face was burned into his memory, not with hatred, but with pain and confusion. He could still hear those last words:

"You never shared the power, brother. It was never ours, only yours."

Yan Ling’s heart had broken long before the destruction of the sect. The flames had consumed everything, but nothing had hurt more than the look of cold triumph in his brother’s eyes as he turned his back, leaving Yan Ling for dead.

The memory snapped away like a whip, leaving Yan Ling standing alone once more by the riverbank, his chest heaving, his fists clenched so tightly that his nails drew blood.

Now, in this new life, the pain of that betrayal was a wound that would never heal. He had been reborn, granted a second life, but the scars of his first life followed him into this one, deep and unrelenting. His heart had hardened to the point where trust felt like a weakness he could no longer afford.

The younger sibling he had in this world was different—innocent, or so it seemed. But that same mask of innocence had been worn once before. His instincts screamed at him, telling him that this brother, too, might one day plunge a blade into his back.

He had seen the same warmth in the new brother’s eyes, the same eagerness to please, to support, but Yan Ling’s heart was cold now. He couldn’t allow himself to be fooled again. He refused to be vulnerable, not even for the sake of family.

As he looked into the river’s reflection, he saw not just the scarred warrior he had become, but the shadow of the man he used to be. His old self—the trusting fool who had given everything for family—was gone. In his place stood someone who understood the cost of trusting too deeply.

He turned away from the water, swallowing the doubt. His hand reached instinctively for the amulet, the Soul Devouring Stone pulsing with a dark, cold energy that seemed to resonate with the turmoil inside him. The stone had been a constant reminder of the power he sought, but it was also a mirror to his soul, feeding off his darkness, his distrust.

In this life, he would not allow history to repeat itself. As Yan Ling’s mind simmered with the memories of his first life, the stone’s dark power pulsed more aggressively, as if it, too, could sense the conflict. It whispered promises of power, of destruction, of the ability to ensure that no one, not even family, could betray him again.

Yan Ling clenched the stone in his palm, feeling its power surge, but also sensing the dangerous toll it was beginning to take on his body. There would be a price for wielding it, and he was already feeling the weight. His breathing had become shallow, his muscles tight with strain. The stone demanded more from him each time it was used.

And soon, the burden would become unbearable.

Yan Ling’s jaw clenched. In this life, he would not let betrayal shape his future. But the weight of that decision was already pressing down on him. His heart may have turned to stone, but it wouldn’t break so easily again.

He turned away from the river, ready to face whatever this life had in store. But the echoes of his past life were always with him, lurking in the shadows, waiting for the moment when his brother would step forward.
