Chapter 9 He Knows About The Baby

“Wow, that was fast—” I began, but my words died in my throat as soon as I saw who was standing there.

RAFAEL

The smile suddenly vanished from my face, and my stomach sank. I had no idea how he’d found my parents‘ address, but I knew one thing for certain–I didn’t want to see him ever again.

He must’ve sensed my intention to slam the door, so Rafael’s blue eyes narrowed. Before I could react, he shoved his hand into the doorframe, risking injury as he wedged his fingers between the door and the frame, preventing me from closing it.

“Alicia” he rasped, his voice hoarse and heavy, “why didn’t you pick up my calls?”

My mind was a mess, racing with thoughts. But my voice came out steady, each word sharp and deliberate. “We broke up, Rafael. What would you expect?”

At the mention of a breakup, Rafael’s expression twisted into something almost amused, like he’d just heard the punchline to an unbelievable joke. His grip on the doorframe tightened, and I could see his knuckles turn pale.

“Broke up?” he repeated, his laugh cold and mocking. “When did we break up, Alicia? I don’t remember that happening.”

My first thought was that the message I sent Rafael hadn’t gone through. But that didn’t make sense; the idea was absurd. Even if by some miracle the message failed to send, well, he was smart. He would’ve understood what my resignation meant.

So why was he standing in front of me at my parents‘ house, shamelessly acting like none of this made sense?

I didn’t bother asking him my questions. Instead, I met his indifference gaze, my patience wearing thin.

“If you really didn’t get it, well, let me make it clear for you then,” I said, keeping my voice steady but firm. “Rafael, I want to break up with you. Did you hear me? Or do I need to repeat it until it gets through?”

“No matter how many times you say it, my answer stays the same.” His jaw clenched. His face turned a shade paler as he fixed his cold and unwavering eyes on me.

“Alicia, I don’t agree to this breakup. I haven’t done anything wrong. What gives you the right to just break up with me like that?”

I was stunned. I stared at him dumbfounded. How could he be so shameless?!

Before I could respond, I heard Dad call out from the kitchen, his voice laced with curiosity. “Alicia, sweetheart, who are you talking to at the door?”

“Dad, it’s nothing! I just got the milkshake I ordered,” I called back quickly. “Oh, right, I forgot to grab a package downstairs! I’ll just head down and get it!”

Without giving Rafael a chance to protest, I shoved him out of the doorway, stepping outside without a second thought.
