CHAPTER-1

FIRST DAY

I walked into the school reception, my heart racing with anticipation. A friendly receptionist greeted me from behind the desk.

"Hi, can I help you?" she asked.

"Hi," I replied, trying to sound confident. "I'm Disha, a new student. I'm not sure where my classroom is."

The receptionist smiled warmly. "Welcome to our school, Disha! Let me check your schedule." Her fingers flew across her computer keyboard. "You're in 11th grade, right?"

I nodded, fidgeting with my backpack straps.

"Okay, your classroom is in Block B, room 214. That's on the second floor. Take the stairs to your left, and it's the second door on your right."

I scribbled down the directions, hoping I wouldn't get lost. "Thanks so much!"

The receptionist handed me a map. "Here's a school map, just in case. If you get lost, don't hesitate to ask anyone for help."

I tucked the map into my backpack, took a deep breath and headed toward Block B. My palms were sweating, but I was determined to make a good impression.

As I climbed the stairs, I noticed a group of students laughing and chatting near the lockers. They seemed to know each other so well, and I felt a pang of envy. Would I ever fit in here?

As I walked into the classroom, my teacher's eyes met mine. "Good morning, class," she said, her voice warm and welcoming. "Today, we have a new student joining us. Disha, would you please introduce yourself?"

I took a deep breath and began, "Hi, my name is Disha. I've lived in this city my whole life, but I'm transferring here from St. Mary's School."

The class nodded, their faces curious.

"I love reading, listening to music, and exploring new places," I added, trying to sound friendly.

My teacher smiled. "Welcome, Disha. We're glad to have you here."

As I sat on my desk, the stark contrast to my old school hit me like a wave. Everything gleamed with opulence – sleek wooden desks, high-tech smartboards, and floor-to-ceiling windows that flooded the room with natural light.

The chill of the air conditioning enveloped me, a luxury I wasn't accustomed to. My last school's sweltering classrooms, with fans creaking overhead, seemed like a distant memory.

The girl sitting in front of me turned her head, her bright smile and sparkling eyes immediately putting me at ease.

"Hi, I'm Riya," she said, her voice friendly and warm. "Welcome to our class. I saw you introducing yourself earlier."

I returned her smile, feeling a sense of relief at her approachable demeanor. "Hi Riya, I'm Disha. Thanks for welcoming me."

Riya glanced around the room before focusing back on me. "So, how's the transition going? Big change from St. Mary's, huh?"

Her casual mention of my old school made me feel more at home. "Yeah, it's definitely different," I replied, eager to connect. "But I'm excited to start fresh."

Riya nodded enthusiastically. "You'll love it here. We're a pretty close-knit class. What do you think of our teacher, Mrs. Jain?"

I grinned, appreciating Riya's easy conversation. "She seems nice. Really welcoming."

Riya leaned in, her voice taking on a conspiratorial tone. "She's amazing."

Riya smiled mischievously. "Hey, want to grab lunch together? I can show you around the school, introduce you to some people."

My heart lifted at her friendly gesture. "That sounds awesome, thanks!"

The bell rang, signaling the lunch break. Riya grabbed her bag and stood up. "Follow me!"

As we walked out of the classroom, I felt a sense of belonging wash over me. Maybe this new school wouldn't be so bad after all.

Riya led me through the bustling corridors, pointing out landmarks – the library, auditorium, cafeteria, and sports complex.

"This is the student lounge," she said, pushing open a door. "We usually hang out here during free periods."

Inside, comfortable couches and colorful bean bags filled the room. Students laughed and chatted, enjoying their lunch.

Riya waved at a group of friends, who welcomed me with warm smiles. "Guys, this is Disha, our new classmate."

I exchanged greetings, feeling grateful for Riya's effortless introduction.

As we settled into a cozy corner, Riya asked, "So, what do you think of our school so far?"

I took a bite of my sandwich, savoring the taste and the warmth of my new surroundings. "It's really nice. Thanks for showing me around."

Riya beamed. "No problem! I'm glad you're fitting in."
