Lex felt the tension in the office grow after his confrontation with Jenna. She had become quieter, more focused, almost robotic in her efficiency. It made Lex uneasy, but he had to admit she was getting the job done. The system’s influence over her was real, and that gave him a new kind of power—one that was hard to ignore.
He opened the CEO System app, and a new mission awaited him.
“New Mission: Consolidate Power.”
“Objective: Identify an opportunity for a strategic alliance within the company.”
Lex frowned. An alliance? He wasn’t even sure who in the company he could trust beyond his immediate team. He thought back to his conversations with some of the other department heads. Most of them had been dismissive of him before, seeing him as just another cog in the corporate machine.
One name stood out—Andrea, the head of Marketing. She had always been more approachable, and she seemed to appreciate his insights. Maybe she would be willing to work with him now that he was in a position of authority.
Later that day, Lex approached Andrea’s office. He knocked gently on the open door, and she looked up from her desk, her sharp blue eyes narrowing slightly before recognition set in.
“Lex, right?” she said, setting her pen down. “What can I do for you?”
Lex smiled, trying to exude confidence. “I was hoping to discuss a potential collaboration between our departments. Now that I’m leading the tech team, I think we could do some really exciting things together.”
Andrea leaned back in her chair, studying him. “Collaboration, huh? I’ll be honest, Lex. Marketing and Engineering don’t usually see eye to eye. The tech side tends to look down on what we do.”
“I’m not like that,” Lex said earnestly. “I understand how crucial your work is. We’re both aiming for the same goal—success for the company. And I think if we put our heads together, we can achieve something that really makes an impact.”
Andrea’s lips curled into a small smile. “You’re certainly ambitious, I’ll give you that. What exactly did you have in mind?”
Lex hesitated for a moment, then took a deep breath. “A new product feature—one that enhances user engagement. I’ve been working on some ideas, but I’d need your team’s expertise to market it effectively. If we can pull this off, it’ll be big. And I think both our departments could benefit from that success.”
Andrea looked at him thoughtfully, then nodded. “Alright, Lex. You’ve got my attention. Set up a meeting, and we’ll see if this idea of yours has potential.”
Lex felt a surge of relief. “Thanks, Andrea. I won’t let you down.”
As he left her office, he felt his phone buzz. The CEO System had a new message.
“Alliance Formed: Trust Established. Influence Increased.”
Lex smiled to himself. Things were finally coming together. He had Andrea on board, his team was working efficiently, and the project was back on track. But as he returned to his desk, he couldn’t shake the feeling that the stakes were only getting higher.
Later that evening, Lex sat at his desk, reviewing the code for the upcoming launch. The office was quiet, the glow of the city lights filtering in through the windows. He was focused, in the zone, when his phone buzzed again.
“New Mission: Test Loyalty.”
“Objective: Issue a directive to a team member that challenges their personal values.”
Lex stared at the screen, a knot forming in his stomach. This was different. He had been comfortable following the system’s orders when it came to advancing his position or dealing with threats. But this... this felt like it was crossing a line.
He looked over at his team. Priya was still at her desk, typing away, her face tense with concentration. She was one of his best developers, always willing to go the extra mile. But she was also someone who struggled with stress, someone who had confided in Lex about her anxiety and the pressure she felt.
Lex opened the chat window on his laptop, his fingers hovering over the keys. He typed a message to Priya.
“Priya, I need you to stay late tonight and finish the integration for the new feature. It’s critical that it’s done by tomorrow morning.”
He knew it was unfair—she had already worked long hours this week, and he could see the exhaustion in her eyes. But the system wanted to test her loyalty, and Lex couldn’t afford to ignore its commands.
Priya’s reply came after a moment.
“Sure, Lex. I’ll get it done.”
Lex felt a pang of guilt. He watched as she sighed, rubbing her temples before turning back to her screen. He knew what he was doing was wrong, pushing her beyond her limits. But he needed to know who was truly loyal, who was willing to follow him no matter what.
His phone buzzed again.
“Loyalty Confirmed: Priya is committed to your success. Trust level increased.”
Lex closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. It was working. The system was helping him build a team that would follow him without question. But at what cost? He had pushed Priya when she was already struggling, and the guilt gnawed at him.
The next day, Priya came into the office, dark circles under her eyes. She handed Lex a report, her voice flat. “Integration’s done. I ran the tests, everything checks out.”
Lex took the report, forcing a smile. “Thank you, Priya. I know it was a lot to ask.”
She nodded, but there was no warmth in her expression. “Just doing my job.”
Lex watched her walk away, his chest tight. He had the loyalty he needed, but he could feel the distance growing between them. The price of power, the system had said. And now he was beginning to understand what that really meant.
As the day went on, Lex couldn’t shake the sense of unease. He was rising in the company, gaining influence, but he was also losing parts of himself—the parts that cared about others, the parts that wanted to do the right thing.
That evening, as he was getting ready to leave, he received a call. The number was unfamiliar, but something told him to answer.
“Hello?” Lex said, his voice cautious.
“Mr. Grey,” a woman's voice said, smooth and confident. “My name is Victoria Delacroix. I believe you’ve heard of me.”
Lex’s breath caught. Victoria Delacroix—the CEO of the largest tech conglomerate in the city. The woman who was rumored to have her hands in everything, whose power seemed limitless.
“Yes,” Lex replied, trying to keep his voice steady. “What can I do for you?”
A soft laugh came through the line. “It’s not about what you can do for me, Mr. Grey. It’s about what we can do for each other. I’ve been watching your progress. You’re using the system, aren’t you?”
Lex’s heart pounded. She knew about the system. Of course she did—she was one of the most powerful people in the city. But why was she reaching out to him?
“I... I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Lex said, his voice shaky.
“Don’t play coy, Lex,” Victoria said, her tone amused. “I know how it works. I know the kind of power it offers. And I know the price it demands. I’m offering you a choice—join me, and we can reshape this city together. Or continue on your own, and see how far you get before the system turns on you.”
Lex swallowed hard, his mind racing. An alliance with Victoria Delacroix could give him everything he ever wanted—power, influence, control. But he also knew the risks. She was dangerous, and aligning with her meant giving up even more of himself to the system.
“I’ll think about it,” Lex said finally.
“Do that,” Victoria replied. “But don’t take too long. The system rewards those who act decisively. And Lex... remember, there are others out there who would love to see you fail.”
The line went dead, and Lex stood there, his phone still pressed to his ear, his thoughts a chaotic mess. The stakes were rising, and he was being pulled deeper into a game he wasn’t sure he could win.
He looked out the window at the city below, the lights twinkling like stars. This was what he wanted, wasn’t it? To rise, to have power, to be more than just another faceless employee. But now that he was here, standing on the edge of something far bigger than he had ever imagined, he couldn’t help but wonder if he was making a terrible mistake.
