Chapter 9

“Hey! I’m Migul’s sister!” she exclaimed, her voice bright and bubbly. Ririna couldn’t help but feel a flash of annoyance. Who just jumps into someone else’s conversation like that?

For a moment, Ririna stared, her mind racing. This felt so intrusive, and the sudden shift in focus left her feeling unsettled. The first impression she had of this woman was decidedly not a good one—she seemed too loud and too forward, and Ririna couldn’t help but think it was a bit mannerless.

“Um, hi?” Ririna managed, her tone cautious as she tried to navigate this unexpected twist.

Migul’s sister didn’t seem to notice her hesitation. “So, what are you and my brother talking about? Is he being weird?” she asked, her laughter bubbling over.

Ririna shot a glance at Migul, who looked slightly embarrassed but was smiling at his sister’s antics. “Not weird, just getting to know each other,” he replied, trying to regain control of the conversation.

As Migul's sister continued to chatter, Ririna felt a mix of irritation and amusement. This wasn’t what she had signed up for, but perhaps it could turn into a funny story later. She decided to roll with it, at least for now. “Well, we were just talking about our jobs,” she said, attempting to steer the conversation back.

The sister leaned closer, her interest piqued. “Ooh, tell me more! Migul’s always talking about work, but I want to hear your side!”

Ririna exchanged a glance with Migul, who gave a small, amused shrug. Maybe this unexpected interruption wouldn’t be so bad after all.

Ririna barely glanced at his sister, her mind elsewhere. Before she could even take a breath to ask her questions, the phone was whisked away, passed from one family member to another. His mom's voice chimed in, followed by his dad's laughter, and then his uncle's teasing remarks. Each of them added to the conversation, their excitement bubbling over, while Ririna remained distant and uninterested. His sister sat there, a mix of confusion and frustration on her face, wondering when she would get a chance to speak. It felt like a whirlwind, and she was just trying to find her footing in the chaos.

Ririna’s patience was wearing thin, but she managed to keep her cool. Thankfully, Migul took the phone, and as he spoke, Ririna felt a flicker of hope. When he turned to her and asked if there was anything else, she seized the moment. “If there’s nothing else, let’s wind up,” she said, her voice steady but firm. She couldn’t quite read Migul’s expression—was he relieved, annoyed, or just as exasperated as she was? Regardless, she knew she had to take charge of the situation.

As the call wrapped up, Ririna felt a weight lift. “Bye,” she said, her tone final. The moment the call ended, she breathed a sigh of relief, grateful to be free from the endless chatter, if only for now.
