Breathless and trembling, Mei Lin turned to Li Wei, who was staring at her with a mix of shock and admiration. “How did you—?”

“I don’t know,” she breathed, her heart still racing from the encounter. “It just… happened.”

Li Wei stepped closer, his expression shifting from surprise to concern. “You shouldn’t have that kind of power. Not here, not in the Forbidden Forest. The Moon Goddess’s blessing is a gift, but it also comes with a price.”

“What do you mean?” Mei Lin asked, confusion clouding her mind.

“The more you use it, the more you attract attention—both good and bad,” he explained, running a hand through his silver-tinged hair. “The balance is delicate. If you draw too much power, you may unleash forces that are beyond your control.”

Before she could respond, a faint rustle echoed from the trees, followed by the flickering of shadows. Li Wei’s eyes narrowed, and he instinctively moved closer to her. “We should leave. There’s no telling if more shadow beasts will come.”

Mei Lin nodded, her pulse quickening. She wanted to ask him so many questions, to understand the connection she felt to him and the moonlight that had led her here. But as they retraced their steps through the forest, a sense of urgency washed over her.

As they reached the village's edge, the familiar cottages came into view, but the comforting sight did little to calm Mei Lin’s racing heart. “Where are you going?” she asked as Li Wei began to move away from her.

“I have to return to my post,” he replied, his expression serious. “The forest needs guarding, and it’s clear that you’re caught in something much larger than yourself. We can’t stay here; it’s not safe.”

“Wait!” Mei Lin called out, desperation rising in her voice. “You can’t just leave me like this. I don’t understand what’s happening. Who are you? Why was I called?”

Li Wei paused, glancing back at her, his gaze softening just a fraction. “I am Li Wei, a guardian of the forest. My duty is to protect both the realm of mortals and the realms beyond.” He hesitated before continuing, “As for you, you are the chosen of the Moon Goddess. That means you have a destiny to fulfill, one that may intertwine with mine.”

Mei Lin’s heart sank. “A destiny? But I’m just a simple girl. I don’t know anything about gods or prophecies.”

“You’re more than that,” Li Wei insisted, stepping closer again. “The dreams you’ve had are not mere fantasies. They are echoes of a greater truth. If you embrace your connection to the Moon, you may be able to wield its power and fulfill your purpose.”

“But what is my purpose?” she whispered, feeling the weight of uncertainty bearing down on her.

Li Wei reached out, brushing his fingers lightly against her arm, sending a ripple of warmth through her. “You must discover it for yourself. I can guide you, but you will have to take the first steps. There are trials ahead, but I promise to be there for you.”

His touch lingered, and for a brief moment, the world around them faded. Mei Lin felt a spark, a connection that transcended their circumstances, igniting something deep within her.

“I want to understand,” she said finally, determination filling her voice. “I want to know why I was chosen.”

“Then come with me,” he urged, stepping back and gesturing toward the darkness of the forest. “We must go to the Moonstone Cave. It is a sacred place where your journey can truly begin.”

“Right now?” Mei Lin asked, glancing nervously back at the village.

“There’s no time to waste,” Li Wei replied, his tone firm yet gentle. “The moon is high, and its power is strongest at night. You must be prepared for what lies ahead.”

With a deep breath, Mei Lin steeled herself, recalling the dreams that had haunted her for so long. She had felt a calling, a sense of urgency pulling her toward the unknown, and now she was ready to answer it.

“Alright,” she said, determination shining in her eyes. “Lead the way.”

Together, they stepped back into the shadows of the Forbidden Forest, the moonlight guiding their path. Mei Lin could feel the weight of destiny upon her shoulders, but for the first time, it didn’t feel like a burden. It felt like freedom.
