Dual Lives, Dual Worlds

The dim glow of the snack shop's backroom illuminated Kim Sooyi’s face as she sat in front of her laptop, the clock ticking well past midnight. The day had been long, and the store had finally closed for the night, but her work was far from over. The screen before her flickered, revealing the familiar faces of the Elders—the silent rulers of South Korea’s underworld, a council of powerful figures who had been the backbone of her rise as the Black Dragon.

The connection was secure, encrypted, and highly secretive. No one in the outside world would ever suspect that this soft-spoken, skilled chef was the feared and respected leader they had chosen to enforce their will.

“Sooyi,” the oldest of the Elders began, his voice gravelly and commanding, “we have a situation.”

She didn’t flinch, her calm demeanor firmly in place. “What happened?”

A second Elder, younger but still seasoned in the world of shadows, spoke up. “One of our rivals, the Nam family, has been moving aggressively. They've been encroaching on our territory—first, small businesses in Gangnam, but now they’re pushing into our higher stakes. They’re preparing for something big.”

Sooyi’s eyes narrowed slightly, her fingers drumming lightly on the table. “Nam family has always been greedy,” she replied evenly. “But why escalate now?”

“There’s more,” the oldest Elder continued. “They've recruited a new player—someone from outside the country. It’s creating unrest among the lower ranks. We need you to step in and resolve the situation before it gets out of control.”

Sooyi’s mind raced. She had expected a small disturbance but not this. The Nams were notorious, but they had always kept to their own territories, wary of open conflict with her. For them to push this far meant something—or someone—was giving them confidence.

“I’ll handle it,” she said firmly. “But this is a delicate situation. I can’t just use brute force. We’ll need to find leverage.”

The Elders nodded, clearly placing their full trust in her judgment. “Do what you must. But act quickly. The balance is fragile.”

With a final nod, the video feed blinked off, leaving Sooyi in the silence of her backroom. She leaned back in her chair, her eyes scanning the darkened space of the store beyond the open door. She had built this life—this peaceful existence where she could indulge her passion for cooking—but the shadows always called her back.

She would have to close the shop tomorrow. This problem couldn’t wait.

Meanwhile, at the Grandparents’ House

In stark contrast to the tension of Sooyi’s hidden world, the atmosphere at Jinwoo’s grandparents’ house was warm and lively. His niece, Soo-ah, ran through the living room with a giggle, her grandparents watching her with adoring smiles. The scent of a home-cooked meal lingered in the air, and the faint sounds of laughter and conversation filled every corner of the house.

Jinwoo sat quietly on the couch, his phone buzzing with constant notifications from work, though he tried to ignore it for the sake of family time. His brother, Seojin, sat across from him, engrossed in a conversation with their mother about a new business venture she was launching.

“You’re always expanding, Mom,” Seojin said with a laugh. “Can’t you slow down for once?”

Their mother, elegant and composed, smiled knowingly. “Retirement is not for me. But I’d love to see one of you settle down, start a family, and give me more grandchildren to spoil.”

Jinwoo rolled his eyes, feigning indifference. “Blind dates don’t count as ‘starting a family,’ Mom.”

His mother’s eyes twinkled mischievously. “You’re too picky, Jinwoo. You should give these dates a chance.”

He sighed, leaning back in the chair. His thoughts wandered briefly to earlier that day at the snack shop. He remembered the fleeting glimpse he caught of the woman behind the counter, busy yet graceful. There was something about her—Kim Sooyi—that intrigued him. Her food, her presence…she was different.

“Thinking about your next blind date?” Seojin teased, snapping him out of his reverie.

“More like a snack shop,” Jinwoo replied casually, though his mind lingered on Sooyi for longer than he intended.

Back at the Snack Shop

As the lights dimmed inside her shop, Sooyi methodically cleaned up for the night, her mind no longer on the simple tasks of running a business but on the problem that awaited her in the underworld. The Nam family’s sudden aggression wasn’t something she could ignore, but it wasn’t something she could approach head-on either. A strategy was forming in her mind, one that would require precision and patience.

Her father, unaware of the storm brewing behind his daughter’s calm face, had gone to bed, leaving her alone with her thoughts. The peaceful hum of the empty shop contrasted sharply with the chaos she knew awaited her tomorrow.

She had to think quickly—what could the Nams be after? Why now, after years of maintaining the fragile peace?

Her phone buzzed, a private line meant only for emergencies. It was her most trusted lieutenant. She answered, her voice steady.

“We’ve tracked the Nam family’s new player,” the voice on the other end reported. “It’s someone from China—a high-level enforcer. He’s been moving quietly, but we think he’s planning to make a strike soon.”

Sooyi’s brow furrowed. This was worse than she thought. The Nams weren’t just posturing—they were preparing for war.

“Tell the men to stand by,” she instructed. “I’ll make contact with the Nam family tomorrow. But we need to be ready for anything.”

Back at the Grandparents’ House

The family dinner continued, filled with laughter and warmth. Jinwoo’s mother gave him a knowing look, catching the slight distraction in his eyes.

“Thinking about something?” she asked, her voice playful yet curious.

Jinwoo shook his head, though the image of Kim Sooyi and her quiet, composed presence flashed briefly in his mind again. “No, just work,” he said with a small smile. But even as he said it, he couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something more about that snack shop, something more about her that he couldn’t quite figure out.

His niece, oblivious to her uncle’s thoughts, tugged at his sleeve. “Uncle Jinwoo, let’s play a game!” she demanded, pulling him out of his reverie entirely.

“Alright, alright,” he relented, smiling down at her. But even as he played along with the family games and laughed with his relatives, the mysterious snack shop owner lingered in the back of his mind.

The Next Morning: The Black Dragon Awakes

Kim Sooyi stood at the door of her shop, the sign flipped to “Closed” for the day. She had no choice. The Nam family wasn’t going to wait, and neither could she. Today, she wasn’t just a chef or a shop owner. Today, she was the Black Dragon, and the underworld awaited her command.

As she stepped into the shadowed streets of Seoul, her mind was clear, focused. She would meet the Nams on her terms, and by the end of the day, the balance of power would be restored. One way or another.
