There’s a saying that goes, "Do not do unto others what you do not want others to do unto you." A perfect example of this is Claudine praying for Layla and Matthias’ downfall. She wanted Matthias to die, reasoning that *they* didn’t deserve happiness—but in truth, this was merely her selfish nature, her greed manifesting from the very beginning.
Claudine was never truly kind to Layla, even from the start. She constantly sought to make Layla feel inferior, asserting her superiority every time she summoned her. Thus, calling *them* disgusting and cheaters is hypocritical. Praying for their ruin is just another reflection of her selfishness—an unwillingness to let others be happy because she always viewed herself as the epitome of grace and superiority.
Yet, I cannot blame Claudine alone. She was raised this way, and her suffering is also a debt her parents must pay. They always looked down on Layla for being parentless, ignoring the fact that Layla never chose that fate. But as characters written to embody arrogance, the price for their cruelty has come due—and it is their daughter who must pay it.
Now, Claudine must endure losing the one she loves, just as Layla never wished to grow up without parents. She must bear the weight of being pitied, just as Layla endured being scorned for lacking what they had. This is their retribution—to understand how it feels, without Layla ever wishing such pain upon them.

I didn't like him much but... poor Riette, he didn't deserve to die. I guess this is the author's punishment for Claudine's misdeeds.
