The hours passed slowly, dragging on as Lila remained locked in her luxurious prison. The room around her felt like a gilded cage, and though everything appeared opulent and inviting, she couldn’t shake the sense of dread that filled the space.
She stood near the window, staring out at the vast, sprawling estate. The moonlight illuminated the gardens below, casting eerie shadows across the lawn. It all looked so peaceful, so deceptively calm. But Lila knew better. Behind the beauty was a web of control and obsession, one that held her tighter with every moment that passed.
Ethan hadn’t come back since their tense conversation, but his presence still loomed, heavy and suffocating. She wondered if he was watching her even now, ensuring she wouldn’t try to escape again. The thought made her feel exposed, vulnerable.
Her mind wandered back to the conversation they had earlier. His words had been gentle, but the undertone was clear: he wouldn’t let her go. No matter how much she tried to reason with him, Ethan’s obsession would not be swayed by logic or emotion. He saw her as his—an object to possess, rather than a person to love freely.
Lila’s thoughts raced as she weighed her options. She had to be smart about this. She couldn’t afford another failed escape attempt. But how could she possibly outwit a man who had planned everything so meticulously, a man with resources and power beyond her reach?
She walked back to the bed and sat down, running a hand through her hair. The fear that had gripped her earlier was now being replaced by a determination to survive. She couldn’t let herself be consumed by panic. Not now. She had to stay strong, even though the odds felt insurmountable.
Just then, there was a soft knock at the door.
Lila tensed, her heart racing. She didn’t know whether to be relieved or terrified. The door opened slowly, and to her surprise, it wasn’t Ethan. It was the maid, the same one who had tried to help her escape earlier.
“Miss Lila,” the maid whispered, her eyes darting nervously around the room as she stepped inside, closing the door quietly behind her. “I came to check on you.”
Lila’s heart softened a little. The maid had risked so much for her, and despite the failure of their previous plan, she had returned. “Thank you,” Lila said softly, her voice laced with gratitude and exhaustion.
The maid approached cautiously, her face pale with worry. “I’m so sorry things turned out this way. I tried to help, but he… Mr. Ethan…” Her voice trailed off, and she shook her head, as if at a loss for words.
“It’s not your fault,” Lila said quickly, not wanting the woman to feel responsible for something out of her control. “I appreciate what you did. I just—” She hesitated, glancing toward the locked door. “I just don’t know what to do now.”
The maid looked down, her fingers nervously twisting the apron she wore. “I don’t either,” she admitted quietly. “But I’ve seen Mr. Ethan like this before. When he sets his mind on something… or someone, he won’t let go. He’s—” She paused, choosing her words carefully. “He’s not someone you can easily reason with.”
Lila’s stomach twisted at the maid’s words. She had already figured out as much, but hearing it confirmed made it feel even more real. “Is there anything I can do?” Lila asked, her voice barely a whisper. “Any way out of this?”
The maid’s expression turned grim. “The estate is under full lockdown. No one is allowed to leave without his permission. He’s hired extra security too, just in case.” She glanced nervously at the window, lowering her voice further. “But maybe… if you play along, if you make him believe that you’re coming around to his way of thinking, you could gain some freedom. You could buy yourself time.”
Lila frowned. It wasn’t the answer she had hoped for, but she knew it was the only viable option for now. She would have to pretend, to make Ethan believe that she was slowly accepting his twisted version of love. It was a dangerous game, but what other choice did she have?
“How do I even begin to convince him?” Lila asked, her throat tight with emotion. The very thought of pretending to be okay with Ethan’s obsession made her skin crawl, but if it was the only way to survive, she would have to play her part.
The maid hesitated for a moment, then leaned closer. “Start small,” she advised softly. “Don’t resist him so much. Show him that you’re willing to talk, that you’re not going to try to escape again. Let him think he’s winning you over.”
Lila swallowed hard, her mind racing with possibilities. It was a delicate balance, one that could tip at any moment if Ethan suspected she wasn’t being genuine. But the alternative was worse—being trapped here forever, with no hope of escape.
“I’ll try,” Lila said finally, her voice determined. “But please… if you hear anything, if there’s any way you can help me… don’t leave me here alone.”
The maid nodded, her eyes filled with sympathy. “I’ll do what I can,” she whispered, though there was a flicker of doubt in her voice. “But please, be careful. He’s… unpredictable.”
With that, the maid hurried out of the room, leaving Lila alone once again.

That night, Lila lay in bed, staring up at the ceiling. Her mind was spinning with the new plan, but it didn’t ease the tightness in her chest. She felt trapped in more ways than one—not just physically, but emotionally. She had to convince a man whose love had turned into a dangerous obsession that she was starting to reciprocate those feelings, all while hiding her true intent.
The darkness around her seemed to press in as Lila closed her eyes, determined to get through this ordeal. The fight for her freedom wasn’t over yet, but for now, she had to play along.
The game had begun.
