The air was thick with tension as Lila followed the maid through the dimly lit corridors of Ethan’s mansion. Every step felt like a heartbeat echoing in her ears, her pulse racing in tandem with the flickering shadows cast by the ornate chandeliers. The walls, once cold and imposing, now felt like they were closing in, as if the house itself were conspiring to keep her trapped.
“This way,” the maid whispered, leading Lila through a narrow hallway that she had never noticed before. It was clear that this passage wasn’t meant to be used by the main residents of the house. The walls were bare, and the lighting was minimal. But it was a way out, and that’s all that mattered.
Lila's hands trembled as she gripped her small bag, her mind racing with thoughts of what could go wrong. She hadn’t seen Ethan since that morning, but she knew his routine well enough by now to know that he was likely asleep, unaware of her impending escape. But if he woke up… if he found her gone…
“Almost there,” the maid whispered again, glancing over her shoulder to make sure Lila was still following.
They reached a door at the end of the hall, one that led to the back of the mansion. It was an old service entrance, tucked away and unused. The maid fumbled with the keys, her hands shaking with nerves.
“Hurry,” Lila urged, her voice barely audible as her anxiety spiked.
Finally, the lock clicked, and the door creaked open. Cool night air rushed in, a stark contrast to the suffocating atmosphere inside the mansion. Lila stepped outside, feeling the first glimmer of freedom she had tasted in days. The stars above twinkled in the dark sky, and for a moment, she allowed herself to believe that she was really going to make it.
“This way,” the maid said, leading her toward the back gate. “There’s a car waiting for you on the other side. You’ll be safe once you’re away from here.”
Lila nodded, her heart pounding. She could see the gate now, just a few yards away. Freedom was so close she could almost taste it.
But then, a voice shattered the silence, freezing her in place.
“Lila.”
Ethan’s voice.
Lila’s blood ran cold as she turned slowly, her breath catching in her throat. Ethan stood at the entrance to the mansion, his tall figure silhouetted against the dim light from inside. His eyes, once so filled with warmth and affection, were now dark with fury.
“What are you doing?” he demanded, his voice low but filled with danger.
The maid stepped back, trembling, but Lila stood her ground, her heart hammering in her chest. “I’m leaving,” she said, her voice shaking despite her attempt to sound strong. “You can’t keep me here, Ethan.”
Ethan took a slow step forward, his gaze never leaving hers. “You think you can just walk away from me? After everything I’ve done for you?”
Lila swallowed hard, her pulse racing. She had to get out of here. Now. She turned and bolted toward the gate, but Ethan was faster. Before she could reach it, he grabbed her arm, yanking her back with terrifying force.
“Let go of me!” Lila screamed, struggling against his grip. But Ethan’s hold was unyielding, his fingers digging into her skin as he dragged her back toward the mansion.
“You’re not going anywhere,” he growled, his voice laced with a dangerous edge. “You belong to me, Lila. And I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure you understand that.”
Lila’s heart raced with fear as Ethan pulled her back into the mansion, slamming the door behind them. The maid stood frozen, too terrified to intervene as Ethan dragged Lila through the house, his grip on her arm tightening with every step.
Once they reached the bedroom, Ethan shoved her inside, slamming the door shut behind him. Lila stumbled, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she backed away from him. But there was nowhere to go. She was trapped, and Ethan knew it.
“Why are you doing this?” she demanded, her voice shaking as tears filled her eyes. “This isn’t love, Ethan! You’re hurting me!”
Ethan’s expression softened for a brief moment, but the darkness in his eyes remained. “I’m doing this because I love you, Lila. Don’t you see? I can’t let you go. I need you. You belong to me.”
Lila shook her head, her tears spilling over. “No… I don’t. You can’t keep me here like this.”
Ethan stepped closer, his hand reaching out to caress her cheek. The touch was gentle, but it only made Lila feel more trapped. His obsession was suffocating, and no matter how much he tried to convince her that it was love, she knew better.
“You’ll understand eventually,” he murmured, his thumb brushing away her tears. “You’ll see that this is for the best.”
Lila’s heart sank as she realized the full extent of Ethan’s obsession. There was no reasoning with him. No escape. He truly believed that he was doing this out of love, and that made him all the more dangerous.
With a final, desperate glance toward the locked door, Lila knew she had to find another way out. But for now, she was trapped in Ethan’s world, bound by his obsession, with no clear way to break free.
