Bill listened to Juliet’s words with a cool tone.
“Because you’re a
trainee officer! Your records haven’t been officially
approved yet. And when I booked the VIP service, I only filled in my name. I’ve checked—our marriage is legal and valid.”
“I see,”Juliet
replied, understanding but then feeling something was off.
“How do you know I’m
a trainee officer? Where did you get that information? If you obtained it
through improper means, as a police officer, I can arrest you!”
Juliet’s serious
tone made Bill laugh out loud, though it was more from disdain.
“Isn’t it true that
you’re an intern in the Miscellaneous Affairs
Investigation Unit?”His voice carried a clear note of
mockery.
Catching the sarcasm, Juliet retorted, “So what if I’m an intern?”
She was a top graduate! She had only joined
the Miscellaneous Affairs Investigation Unit to take care of her younger
brother.
“I’m not interested
in hearing anything irrelevant! Let’s meet up and clear
this up!”Bill wanted to meet Juliet in person to
discuss and have her sign a supplemental contract, but he had no intention of
revealing his true identity to her.
Juliet sensed his hostility. If it were
about anything else, she would have hung up by now, but since it was such an
important matter as marriage registration, they indeed needed to meet and
clarify things.
“Alright, let’s
meet at 9 PM at the McDonald’s across from the police
station where I work! I’ve got other tasks to handle
now, so I’ll hang up.”
Juliet hung up the phone abruptly, and Bill
sneered, “Damn it, McDonald’s
again?!”
He thought she deliberately hung up before
he could respond, assuming it was part of her scheme. Little did he know that
Juliet had suddenly spotted Jack’s return and had
rushed to finish her paperwork, which is why she ended the call so quickly.
“Deputy Captain Jack, I remember that file
is with you. Can I take a look?”Juliet politely asked
Jack.
Jack, in his fifties, had a weathered face
but eyes as sharp as a hawk’s. It was said that in his
younger days, he was a legendary figure in the team, though now, for some
reason, he had become quite unlikable.
“Deputy Captain Jack, if you just tell me
whether you have it, I’ll find it myself. I won’t trouble you.”
Juliet knew Jack’s
temper; her request might just make him throw something and start yelling, but
she was willing to risk his anger to complete her task!
Jack stared at her for several seconds,
making Juliet feel incredibly uneasy. Just when she thought he was about to
explode, Jack muttered through gritted teeth, “Third
level on the left, fifth file in the green cabinet.”
Then he returned to his desk without
another word.
Juliet breathed a sigh of relief, found the
file as Jack had directed, and sat down to review it.
Around 8 PM, the captain and his team
returned. Not only had they located the suspect’s
hideout, but they had also arrested several accomplices—about seven or eight suspects were brought in.
The captain had a wound on his face but
didn’t bother with treatment. He took off his torn
jacket while giving Juliet a thumbs-up.
“Quick thinking, kid! You’ve earned yourself a commendation today!”
“Captain, actually I…”Juliet started to explain, but the captain was already off,
bustling about his work.
He was always in a hurry, never walking
when he could run—a stark contrast to the sullen Jack.
Juliet didn’t even get a chance to finish her sentence.
She would have to wait until the captain and his team finished interrogating
the suspects overnight.
With everyone busy, Juliet finished
organizing the files and then helped with the records, staying occupied until
after 10 PM. When the captain asked her to go to the McDonald’s across the street to buy supper for everyone, Juliet suddenly
remembered her appointment with Bill!
But over an hour had already passed!
Juliet glanced at her phone—it was already past 10 PM.
Bill had probably left by now!
