I kind of get why he did that. Although he has halfway given up on them, he still wants to get their approval. They were his parents, the people he so dearly loved to the point where he desperately tried to receive their love. Although they did not love him back, he still loved them. They were the people always in front of his mind, his very first thought so how could he even think of giving the money to someone else? The very reason why he even worked so hard to begin with was to make them proud. Everything he did so far was for them. As he has already come so far, why not do this as well. You can't hate someday from today to tomorrow and these people held the most place in his heart. It's not easy for him to detach himself from them. He can't hate them yet so he will do everything he can until his last breath.
