Some years ago
The forest was ablaze. Flames swiveled in the dark night, burning tree bark and transforming leaves into ash. Inside the great glimmering inferno was a car, the front hood dented, and the windows cracked.
Inside the car was a boy.
Nobody knew at the time. Firefighters had just arrived at the scene, and the police were busy keeping the crowd from getting too close. From their view, the only thing visible was the huge, red monster gobbling the forest and turning it into nothing but ash and dirt.
Then everything went white. Smoke rose over them, settling into their lungs and forcing them to keep their eyes shut. The fire swallowed everything in its path, and soon, the woods will be gone.
That was when they set eyes on the vehicle. Paint chipped of. Wheels punctured and leather seats sunken. They prayed no one was in there, but deep down, they knew what they would find. Because cars most definitely didn't drive down long, narrow roads. They didn't slam into trees, flip several times in the air, and explode
Not on their own. But a mortal could. A mortal could transform a picturesque forest into a wasteland. They could transform a beautiful face, with startling dark green eyes into a candle of wax, dripping till nothing, not even skin or bone remained.
The fire had stripped away almost everything. Including the soul in the car. People whispered that they would need dental records to identify him.
But that would come later. For now, the authorities would have to find a way to get him out of the car.
Father back, in the darkest corner of the forest, a boy made his calculations, too, counting off suspects.
One, two, three....four?
Well, time would reveal everything. Time and a carefully crafted plan. Until then, the boy would put on a mask and sit like a doll on a shelf, waiting patiently. It was the only way to escape this hellhole. That burning skeleton had once been alive, breathing, and he had been loved.
Held.
Kissed.
Not anymore. The fire had transformed him into something unrecognizable, and the sight made the boy tremble, tears sliding down like a fountain on his cheeks. No...
He needed to be strong. To be cold, like a porcelain doll. Porcelain limbs couldn't tremble, and a heart made of plastic couldn't ache this terribly. It couldn't break. It couldn't bleed.
But eyes made of glass could see everything.
Now, the boy turned away from the wreckage, an image begin to unfold behind his eyes. There was a luxurious mansion, high up on a hill, and a very exclusive list of guests.
And maybe, if everything went as planned, his porcelain limbs would turn back to flesh, and his heart would soften to red.
But first, there would be fire.
