chapter 1: The New student

#### **Chapter 1: The New Student**

Everwood Academy was a prestigious private school, nestled in the hills of a quiet town, where the children of wealthy families studied alongside scholarship students who had fought hard for their place. The sprawling campus, with its ivy-covered buildings and perfectly manicured lawns, was home to some of the most talented students in the country. Among them was Kai, the school’s golden boy.

Kai was the kind of person everyone wanted to be around. With his tousled black hair, warm brown eyes, and a smile that could light up a room, he had a natural charisma that drew people in. As captain of the swim team and president of the student council, he was the embodiment of confidence and charm. Teachers adored him, students admired him, and girls frequently swooned over him. But for all his popularity, Kai felt an emptiness that he couldn’t quite explain. It was as if he was wearing a mask, always smiling, always playing the part everyone expected of him.

One crisp autumn morning, everything changed. A new student arrived at Everwood Academy—a boy named Ash.

The first time Kai saw Ash was in the hallway between classes. Ash was a striking contrast to the bright, bustling energy of the school. He had silver hair that framed his pale face, his features delicate but sharp, like a piece of fine porcelain. His eyes were a piercing gray, almost silver, and they held a quiet intensity that seemed to see right through people. He wore a simple black sweater and dark jeans, his slender frame moving gracefully through the crowd, almost as if he was trying to remain unnoticed. But Kai noticed him immediately.

“Who’s that?” Kai asked his best friend, Liam, as they watched Ash from across the hallway.

Liam shrugged. “The new kid, I guess. I heard he transferred from some school in the city. No one knows much about him.”

Kai felt a strange pull towards Ash, an inexplicable curiosity that he couldn’t shake. There was something about the way Ash carried himself, a certain air of mystery and solitude that intrigued Kai. He wasn’t like the other students, who were loud and eager to make friends. Ash seemed different—reserved, almost aloof.

That afternoon, in their shared literature class, Kai got his chance to get a closer look. Ash was seated at the back of the room, his eyes focused on the book in front of him. He didn’t seem to notice the whispers and glances from the other students, who were clearly curious about the new arrival. Kai watched him from his seat near the front, unable to tear his gaze away.

As the teacher, Mr. Thompson, began the lesson, he introduced Ash to the class. “Everyone, this is Ash Winter,” he announced. “He’s just transferred here, so let’s all do our best to make him feel welcome.”

Ash glanced up briefly, his expression unreadable. Kai caught his eye for just a moment, and in that fleeting second, he felt a spark—something electric, something unfamiliar. Ash’s gaze was intense, almost challenging, before he quickly looked back down at his book.

The lesson went on, but Kai found it hard to concentrate. His thoughts kept drifting back to Ash. Who was this boy? Why did he seem so guarded? And why, out of all the people at Everwood, did he feel this strange connection with him?

After class, Kai decided to take a chance. As the students filed out, he lingered near the doorway, waiting for Ash. When Ash finally approached, Kai stepped forward.

“Hey,” Kai said, flashing his friendly smile. “Ash, right?”

Ash paused, looking up at Kai with those sharp gray eyes. “Yes,” he replied simply, his voice soft but steady.

Kai extended a hand. “I’m Kai. Welcome to Everwood.”

Ash looked at Kai’s hand for a moment, as if considering whether to take it. After a brief hesitation, he reached out and shook it. “Thanks,” he said quietly.

Kai could feel the coolness of Ash’s hand, the slight firmness of his grip. There was a tension in Ash’s posture, a subtle wariness that Kai couldn’t quite place.

“I know it can be tough, being the new kid and all,” Kai continued, trying to make conversation. “If you need anything or have any questions, feel free to ask.”

Ash nodded but didn’t say anything more. He seemed uncomfortable, like he wasn’t used to people approaching him so openly. Kai felt a flicker of frustration—why was this so difficult? He was usually so good at talking to people, making them feel at ease. But with Ash, it was like there was a wall between them.

Just as Kai was about to try again, Ash spoke. “I’m fine,” he said, his tone polite but distant. “But… thanks.”

Before Kai could respond, Ash turned and walked away, leaving Kai standing there, his hand still outstretched. Kai watched him go, feeling a strange mix of disappointment and determination. He had never met anyone like Ash before—someone who seemed so closed off, so hard to read. But he wasn’t going to give up that easily.

**That evening, as Kai lay in bed, he found himself thinking about Ash again.** The way his gray eyes had looked right through him, the way he seemed to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders. Kai couldn’t help but wonder what kind of secrets Ash was hiding behind those guarded eyes. And more importantly, why did he feel this overwhelming urge to find out?

The next day, Kai made it his mission to learn more about the enigmatic new student. He watched Ash during lunch, noticing how he sat alone at the far end of the cafeteria, his nose buried in a book. He didn’t talk to anyone, didn’t engage in the usual high school social rituals. It was as if he wanted to disappear into the background, to become invisible.

Kai wasn’t sure why, but he felt a deep need to break through that invisibility, to see the real Ash hidden beneath the surface. He decided to try a different approach. Instead of confronting Ash directly, he would try to observe, to understand. Maybe then he could figure out the best way to reach him.

Days turned into a week, and Kai continued to watch Ash from a distance. He noticed that Ash had a routine—always arriving early to class, always sitting at the back, always leaving as soon as the bell rang. He never lingered, never made small talk. It was almost as if he was afraid to let anyone get too close.

But despite Ash’s efforts to remain unnoticed, Kai couldn’t help but be drawn to him. There was something about Ash that captivated him, something that made him want to know more. He wasn’t sure if it was Ash’s quiet strength or the way he seemed to carry a secret burden, but whatever it was, Kai was determined to find out.

One afternoon, Kai got his chance. He spotted Ash in the library, sitting alone at a table in the back. The library was nearly empty, and Kai knew this was the perfect opportunity to approach him without an audience.

Taking a deep breath, Kai walked over to the table and took a seat across from Ash. “Mind if I join you?” he asked, his tone casual, though his heart was racing.

Ash looked up, surprise flickering in his gray eyes. For a moment, he said nothing, just stared at Kai as if trying to gauge his intentions. Then, finally, he nodded. “Sure,” he replied softly.

Kai smiled, feeling a small victory. “What are you reading?” he asked, glancing at the book in Ash’s hands.

Ash hesitated before answering. “It’s a book on ancient mythology,” he said quietly. “I’m interested in stories… especially the ones that aren’t often told.”

Kai raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Why those stories?”

Ash’s gaze dropped to the book. “Because they’re different,” he murmured. “They’re… forgotten, in a way. Overlooked.”

Kai watched him closely, sensing a deeper meaning behind his words. “Do you feel like that sometimes? Forgotten?”

Ash looked up, and for a moment, Kai saw a flicker of vulnerability in his eyes. “Maybe,” he admitted. “It’s easier that way, to stay in the background. People don’t ask too many questions.”

Kai leaned forward, his curiosity piqued. “What if I want to ask questions?”

Ash’s lips curled into a small smile, the first real smile Kai had seen from him. “Then I guess you’re different,” he said softly.

There was a moment of silence between them, a comfortable pause that spoke louder than words. Kai felt a strange sense of calm in Ash’s presence, a feeling he hadn’t expected. He had approached Ash out of curiosity, but now he was realizing there was something more—something that drew him to this enigmatic boy in a way he couldn’t quite explain.

“What about you?” Ash asked suddenly, breaking the silence. “Why are you here, talking to me? You’re popular, you have friends. Why spend your time with someone like me?”

Kai considered his answer carefully. “Because I’m tired of being surrounded by people who only see the surface,” he said honestly. “I feel like… like I don’t really connect with anyone. Not the way I want to.”

Ash studied him for a moment, his expression thoughtful. “And you think you can connect with me?”

Kai shrugged, a smile playing on his lips. “I’d like to try.”

Ash didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he closed his book and set it aside, leaning back in his chair. “You’re persistent,” he observed, though there was no annoyance in his tone. If anything, he sounded amused.
