Chapter 5: A Desperate Plea
The interrogation room was silent, save for the occasional rustle of papers and the hum of the fluorescent light overhead. Emma sat at the metal table, her mind still turning over the latest evidence. The case had taken on a new complexity, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that Julian was hiding something crucial.
The door creaked open, and Julian was led in by an officer. He was wearing the same leather jacket, but there was a weariness to him now, an edge of frustration that hadn’t been there before. He sat down at the table, his usual cocky demeanor replaced by a look of raw vulnerability.
Emma raised an eyebrow, surprised by the change. “Julian. What’s going on?”
Julian slumped in his chair, running a hand through his hair. He looked tired, as if the weight of the world had suddenly settled on his shoulders. “I need to talk to you,” he said, his voice lacking its usual bravado. “There’s something I haven’t told you.”
Emma leaned forward, her curiosity piqued. “Alright. What is it?”
Julian took a deep breath, his eyes meeting hers with a seriousness she hadn’t seen before. “I didn’t kill Victoria. I know it looks bad, but I swear I’m not the one you’re looking for.”
Emma studied him carefully, searching for any sign of deceit. “Then why didn’t you tell me this before? Why keep up the act?”
“Because I didn’t think you’d believe me,” Julian admitted. “You see a guy like me and assume I’m guilty of everything. But I’m not. I’m just trying to stay alive and figure out who’s really behind this.”
Emma’s eyes softened slightly. She could see the desperation in his expression, the fear that wasn’t part of his usual facade. “Alright. If you’re telling the truth, then help me. Who might have had a reason to hurt Victoria?”
Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a crumpled piece of paper, sliding it across the table to Emma. “Here. This is a list of people who might have had a motive. They all had issues with Victoria.”
Emma unfolded the paper, reading the names scribbled hastily in Julian’s handwriting. There were several names, each accompanied by a brief description of their connection to Victoria. Among them were business rivals, disgruntled former employees, and people with known grudges.
“This is a good start,” Emma said, nodding as she scanned the list. “But why should I trust this?”
Julian’s eyes were earnest as he looked at her. “Because I’m asking you to. I know I’m not the most reliable witness, but I swear I’m not lying about this. I’m not saying I’m a saint, but I didn’t kill her.”
Emma weighed his words carefully. Julian’s vulnerability was a stark contrast to the facade he’d maintained before. He was giving her something tangible, something she could use to investigate further.
“Alright,” Emma said, pushing the paper back to him. “I’ll look into these names. But you need to be straight with me from now on. No more games.”
Julian nodded, relief washing over his face. “Thank you. I know I’ve been a jerk, but I’m telling the truth now. I just want to find out who really did this.”
Emma could see the tension in his posture, the way he was clenching his fists, trying to hold himself together. He was still playing his part, but now there was a flicker of genuine fear.
“We’ll see what we can find,” Emma said, standing up. “But remember, if you’re hiding anything else, it’ll come out. I need you to be completely honest with me.”
Julian met her gaze with a nod. “I understand. I’ll do whatever it takes.”
As Julian was led away, Emma felt a mixture of doubt and determination. The case had taken an unexpected turn, and Julian’s plea had added a new layer of complexity. She had a list of names to investigate, and she needed to find out if they could lead to the real killer.
Emma took a deep breath, steeling herself for the work ahead. Julian’s desperate plea had shifted the focus of the case, and she was determined to uncover the truth, no matter where it led. She had to find out if Julian was truly innocent or if his vulnerability was just another part of his elaborate act.
