The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the Castillo estate, giving the grand mansion a foreboding atmosphere. Aarohi’s mind was a whirlwind of thoughts and questions, every corner of the house now seeming filled with hidden dangers and secrets. She couldn't shake the ominous conversation she had overheard between Javier and Leonardo.
She had barely seen Javier since he had left her that morning. The estate was sprawling, making it easy for him to avoid her. But she knew she couldn't just sit around any longer. Aarohi was never one to stay idle in the face of uncertainty. She had to get answers, even if it meant confronting Javier directly.
Aarohi found him in the study, standing by the large windows that overlooked the estate gardens. He was staring out, lost in thought, his posture tense. The afternoon light illuminated his sharp features, making him look every bit the formidable man she had married. But now, seeing him in this moment of quiet, she realized how burdened he truly was.
“Javier,” she called softly as she entered the room.
He turned to face her, his expression guarded but softening when he saw her. “Aarohi. I didn’t expect you.”
She took a deep breath, steeling herself. “We need to talk. I overheard you and Leonardo earlier... What did he mean when he said we were all in danger?”
Javier’s jaw tightened, and he turned his back to her, looking out the window again. For a long moment, he didn’t say anything, as if weighing his next words carefully.
Finally, he sighed. “It’s complicated, Aarohi. There are things about my family—about this marriage—that you don’t know. Things I never wanted you to get involved in.”
Aarohi crossed the room to stand beside him. “I’m already involved, Javier. Whatever this is, I deserve to know the truth. I need to know what I’m dealing with.”
He looked down at her, his eyes filled with an emotion she couldn’t quite place. “You’re right,” he said quietly. “You deserve the truth.”
He walked over to the desk, opening one of the drawers and pulling out a small, weathered box. He opened it, revealing a collection of old photographs, letters, and documents. He handed one of the photographs to Aarohi—a faded picture of a man and woman standing in front of a large estate that looked eerily similar to the Castillo mansion.
“This is my father,” Javier said, his voice thick with emotion. “And that’s my mother. This picture was taken the year before he was murdered.”
Aarohi’s breath caught in her throat. “Murdered?”
Javier nodded, his expression grim. “My father was involved in some dangerous business. Illegal dealings that brought a lot of enemies into our lives. When he was killed, it sent shockwaves through our family. My mother did everything she could to protect me and Elena, but the damage was already done. We’ve been living with the consequences ever since.”
Aarohi stared at the photograph, trying to process everything. “And Leonardo? What does he have to do with this?”
“Leo... He’s always been the black sheep of the family. He resents me for inheriting the estate and the business, even though I never wanted any of it. He thinks I’m weak, that I’m not capable of protecting the family. But the truth is, I’ve been trying to distance myself from all of it. The illegal dealings, the danger—it’s not the life I want. But it’s not that simple.”
Aarohi’s mind was racing. “So, this danger Leonardo was talking about... It’s related to your father’s past?”
“Yes,” Javier admitted. “But it’s more than that. There are people who want revenge for what my father did. And now that we’re married, Aarohi... you’re a target too.”
The weight of his words hit her like a ton of bricks. She had known there were secrets, but this was beyond anything she had imagined. Her life, her safety—everything was at risk because of this marriage.
She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. “Why didn’t you tell me this before? Why keep me in the dark?”
Javier’s expression softened, a look of regret passing over his face. “Because I wanted to protect you. I thought if you didn’t know, if you stayed out of it, you’d be safe. But I was wrong. Keeping secrets only made things worse.”
Aarohi looked up at him, seeing the guilt in his eyes. For the first time, she understood the burden he was carrying, the weight of responsibility that had been thrust upon him. She couldn’t blame him for trying to shield her from it, but now they were in this together, whether they liked it or not.
“What do we do now?” she asked, her voice steady despite the fear bubbling inside her.
Javier took her hands in his, his grip firm but gentle. “We face it together. I won’t let anything happen to you, Aarohi. I promise.”
His words were comforting, but Aarohi knew that promises alone wouldn’t be enough to protect them from the shadows closing in. They needed a plan. They needed to be prepared for whatever was coming next.
Later that night, the mansion was eerily quiet. The servants had retired to their quarters, and the hallways were dark, save for the dim light spilling from the chandeliers. Aarohi couldn’t sleep. She lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, her mind racing with thoughts of Javier’s revelations.
Every creak, every whisper of wind against the windows sent a shiver down her spine. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something was lurking in the darkness, waiting for the right moment to strike.
Finally, she couldn’t take it anymore. She slipped out of bed and quietly padded to the window, pulling back the heavy curtains to look out at the moonlit gardens. The sight of the sprawling estate usually brought her a sense of calm, but tonight it felt menacing, as if the beauty of the place was hiding something sinister.
As she gazed out into the night, she caught a glimpse of movement near the edge of the garden. Her heart skipped a beat, and she squinted, trying to make out what it was. A figure—shadowy and indistinct—was moving quickly along the perimeter of the estate, slipping in and out of the shadows.
Aarohi’s blood ran cold. Was it just a gardener working late? Or was it something more dangerous? She pressed her hand to the glass, her breath fogging up the window as she watched the figure disappear into the darkness.
She had to tell Javier.
Aarohi rushed out of the room, her bare feet silent against the cold marble floors as she made her way to Javier’s study. She found him there, hunched over his desk, poring over documents with a look of deep concentration.
“Javier,” she whispered urgently as she entered the room. He looked up, alarmed by her tone.
“What is it?” he asked, rising from his chair.
“There’s someone in the garden,” Aarohi said, her voice trembling. “I saw them from the window. They were moving along the edge of the estate.”
Javier’s expression hardened. He moved quickly to the side of the room, opening a hidden cabinet and retrieving a handgun. Aarohi’s eyes widened in shock. She hadn’t expected this.
“Stay here,” he ordered, his voice firm. “Lock the door behind me. Don’t open it for anyone but me.”
Aarohi nodded, her heart pounding in her chest as she watched him leave the study, the gun held tightly in his hand. She quickly locked the door, her fingers trembling as she turned the key.
She paced the room, her mind racing with fear and anxiety. What if something happened to him? What if the danger was closer than they realized? She couldn’t lose him—not now.
Minutes passed, feeling like hours, before she heard a soft knock on the door. She froze, her breath catching in her throat.
“Aarohi, it’s me,” Javier’s voice called from the other side of the door.
She rushed to unlock it, relief flooding through her as she saw him standing there, unharmed. He stepped inside, locking the door behind him.
“What happened?” Aarohi asked, her voice shaky.
Javier shook his head. “Whoever it was, they’re gone now. I couldn’t catch them. But we need to be on high alert. This isn’t over.”
Aarohi felt a wave of fear wash over her, but Javier pulled her into his arms, holding her close. She could feel the steady beat of his heart against her cheek, grounding her in the midst of the chaos.
“We’ll get through this,” he whispered, his voice filled with determination. “I won’t let anything happen to you. I promise.”
As they stood there, wrapped in each other’s embrace, Aarohi realized that this was just the beginning. The shadows surrounding them were growing darker, and the danger was closer than ever. But with Javier by her side, she felt a flicker of hope.
They would face whatever was coming together.
