The elevator door opened and Crystal walked in. She was going back home after a long day at the orphanage. She was so tired, all she wanted was to take a nap. She pressed the button to her floor and leaned on the wall.
"Haa, this is taking forever!"
The door was about to close when she heard a voice.
"Hey, wait! Wait for me!"
She quickly sprung and held the door to open. A young woman who seemed to be in a hurry walked in.
"Thanks so much! I could have missed it if it wasn't for you!"
"It's alright. Floor?"
"Sixth floor please, thanks. "
"Oh, that's mine too!"
"Really? What a coincidence! My name is Railien. It's nice to meet you!"
"Nice to meet you too. My name is Crystal. You must be new here."
"Haha, it's that obvious? I moved here yesterday. "
Railien said, looking embarrassed. She then extended her hand to Crystal, who shook it. They both laughed. After withdrawing their hands, Crystal leaned back on the elevator. They both went silent.
With a ding, the elevator came to a halt and the doors opened. Crystal stood straight and walked out. Railien followed her. She walked steadily towards her door. She could hear Railien's footsteps behind her. She got to her door and pulled out her keys from her red handbag. She paused.
"Well, this is me!"
"Oh, no kidding, you live there? What a coincidence, my room is just opposite yours!"
"Wow, really? Must be fate!"
"I guess we'll see each other more often!"
"Yeah. Well, I gotta go now. I'm so exhausted. I hope to see you soon!"
"Sure, have a good rest then. "
Railien said as she opened the door to her room. She got in as soon as she heard Crystal's door close. She took her shoes off, placed them on the shoe rack and put on indoor shoes. Walking towards the living room, she couldn't help but grin.
Perhaps this was Railien's idea of a perfect first impression. She was happy that everything went according to plan. As much as she didn't know anything useful about her, she had hoped that Crystal would be friendly.
From what she experienced today, she was sure that it was gonna be smooth sailing. After all, they were already on talking terms and age hadn't done much to get there. Perhaps it wouldn't be long before everyone could see how amazing she is.
"Hey, that's not fair! One more round, this time, I'll definitely win!"
"You've already said that eight times now, come on, don't be a sore loser, let's play another game. Shall we?"
"Haa, I don't wanna play anymore. You are good at all these games. It's unfair."
"How about this then? Let's play something you are good at. What do you think?"
"That's a great idea. Only that, compared to you, I seem to be good at nothing! Haaa!"
"Hey, don't say that. I am sure you are better than I at many things!"
"Oh yeah, name them. Tell me, what am I better than you at, hmmm?"
"That. Well, oh my, did you get a new controller? It looks amazing. Wow!"
"It's the same we've been using for the past eight months. Stop trying to change the subject!"
It had been a year now since Railien and Crystal met. The two had gotten really close to the point that they seemed to have known each other for years. Crystal, having no friends, got really attached to Railien.
Railien, on the other hand, seemed to know this and did everything she could to stay by her side most of the time. She requested a reduction to the number of missions she had in a day and now only had three each day. The rest of her time was spent around Crystal.
During this time, she accompanied Crystal to social functions, visits to the orphanage and even to her office in tech city 013. She had learned so much about her, perhaps more than she needed to. She knew her every move. From when she woke up to when she slept. Even what she ate and wore.
She soon realized that assassinating her would be a pretty easy thing, if that were her goal. But her goal was much greater than that. She had met all kinds of people through Crystal. She now realized why Crystal was assigned as a special mission.
As she got closer and closer to Crystal, she learned more and more and realized that her boss might have been putting her skills to the test rather than putting his full trust in her. Because everything she had learned in the past year, could have easily been told to her by the organization in order to save her the trouble.
But besides all that, she also realized that having to find out about these things on her own, was actually better than being told, because now she had Crystal's trust and information, both at the same time. Perhaps if she had known all the details beforehand, it would have taken more than a year to get close to her.
Now the only thing left to do, was to device a plan. She needed a plan that would get her as many targets as possible from Crystal's circle of people, and still keep Crystal's trust. It wasn't going to be an easy job. But she expected as much.
As much as Crystal seemed to be a sweet and innocent girl, she was secretly wild and untamed. And Railien knew this. Crystal always held huge underground parties in secluded areas at the end of every month. The parties were always wild, and some people ended up with casualties most of the time.
The people she invited were, of course, not her friends but people she needed to interact with if she wanted to keep being on top of the food chain. She didn't care much about what happened to them and always told them they were on their own once they were underground.
Such a party was going to be held in two weeks' time and that is when.
"I shall strike!"
Railien said as she raised her sword and swung it at Crystal, who was trying her best to dodge and strike at the same time. They had decided to play a sparing 4D game after Crystal said it was the one thing she hoped she was better at than Railien.
"You're dead! I win!"
"Damn,fine, you got me! Haha!"
Railien said as she got up from the floor. Turns out, Crystal won.
"But this is not the real war!"
Railien thought to herself. She had decided that she wouldn't be too greedy. She'd only take five people at every party. Her plan was set in stone.
