"It sure has Polly, how long now? 3 years?"
The young woman looked into the young man's eyes only to see the spark that was there before now replaced with a coldness. The young woman looked away as a chill grew up her spine, she looked towards the river and then back at the young man who was still staring at her.
"You've gotten more beautiful." He stated plainly with a still face, but the words made her heart skip a beat. "And you've become colder." She replied and he looked at her slightly confused, she smiled and continued with "I can see it in your eyes, you're not the same as before." He stayed quiet not knowing what to say.
A few minutes passed when the young man finally asked the question that has been tugging at him since this young woman showed up, "Did you miss me?" the young woman looked at the young man, startled by the question. "Did you ever think about me in those 3 years that you didn't come here?"
The young woman looked away and smiled sadly, "Every day" she replied. "Then why didn't you come?" the young man stated more than asked. "I got promoted, longer shifts but more money, I'm able to take care of my family now, I'm no longer looked down upon by Purples, only ignored." The young woman scoffed at her last statement.
The young man looked at the sad smile the lady had on her face and concern grew in his heart. He put his hand on the side of her face and turned it towards him, "I will never ignore you Polly." The young woman's expression changed from sad to happy, "I know Jack, you're one of the only people that can make me truly happy."
The two stared at each other in the eyes and this time the young woman didn't pull away, she couldn't find the strength to, so she scooted closer. The young woman rested her head on the young man's shoulder and found comfort there.
Before she knew it the sun had broke through the clouds and the warmth she felt on her face was unfamiliar, as she stirred she found that there was no longer a young man sitting beside her, but a jacket over her that kept her warm from the cold night.
The young woman rubbed her eyes and got up readying herself to go home and get ready for work. As she got home she found her sister sitting impatiently on the couch, as she walked through the door her sister rushed up to her. There were tears streaming down her face, "M-mom, s-she..." the sister didn't need to continue in order for the young woman to understand what she was saying.
The young woman rushed to the mother's bedroom readying herself for whatever she would find. When she walked through the door she found two doctors standing in the room chatting, when she looked towards the bed she found that the cover to her mother's bed was over her head to hide the body underneath.
The young woman shook her head in disbelief while the doctors looked over to her. "Miss Polly?" she looked over to the doctors and nodded, her head not able to release any words. "I'm sorry to say but your mother seemed to have died in her sleep, but at least she went in the most peaceful way." The young woman fell to the floor as the doctors rushed over to catch her before she hit the hard ground, her mind raced and she didn't know what she did to deserve this.
That day the young woman called in for a 3 day leave, but because of a death in the family they gave her a week off and payed her during that time as well. The body was taken away and a few days passed by slowly as she sat in her room crying or sleeping. No one came to visit, no one came to say they were sorry for her loss, all because the high and mighty believed that they were too good to visit such a lowly person's house.
On the fourth day the young woman's sister called out that someone was there, but she didn't care, she rolled onto her side and closed her eyes trying to ignore the sounds. The door to her room opened and then closed, she felt the side of her bed cave in on one side as someone sat down.
